Smart Grid “Smart grid” generally refers to a class of technology people are using to bring utility electricity delivery systems into the 21st century, using computer-based remote control and automation. These systems are made possible by two-way communication technology and computer processing that has been used for decades in other industries. They are beginning to be used on electricity networks, from the power plants and wind farms all the way to the consumers of electricity in homes and businesses. They offer many benefits to utilities and consumers -- mostly seen in big improvements in energy efficiency on the electricity grid and in the energy users’ homes and offices. For a century, utility companies have had to send workers out to gather much of the data needed to provide electricity.

Making sustainable development a part of all government policy and operations - Policy Issue The government is committed to sustainable development. This means making the necessary decisions now to realise our vision of stimulating economic growth and tackling the deficit, maximising wellbeing and protecting our environment, without affecting the ability of future generations to do the same. The government takes account of sustainable development as a part of how it develops its policies, how it runs its buildings and how it buys its goods and services.

Energy, Environment and Resources The Energy, Environment and Resources department, led by Bernice Lee , conducts high-level research on critical issues of energy security, environment and resource governance. Latest: US Energy: the New Reality There is undoubtedly a US energy revolution under way – but where that revolution will lead is not yet clear. This paper explains trends in the North American energy landscape, and how they are likely to evolve.

Home energy generation Home energy generation Renewable energy technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, and biomass heaters are becoming increasingly popular. These are effective alternatives to fossil fuels and will help you to meet your own energy requirements and reduce your home's carbon dioxide emissions. Grants may also be available to offset against the cost of installation. Efficient energy use Energy efficiency Efficient energy use, sometimes simply called energy efficiency, is the goal to reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and services. For example, insulating a home allows a building to use less heating and cooling energy to achieve and maintain a comfortable temperature. Installing LED lighting, fluorescent lighting, or natural skylight windows reduces the amount of energy required to attain the same level of illumination compared to using traditional incandescent light bulbs. Improvements in energy efficiency are generally achieved by adopting a more efficient technology or production process[1] or by application of commonly accepted methods to reduce energy losses.

Energy Manager Introduction Saving energy resources in their own buildings is a priority for all councils. All local authorities have environmental policies and environmental or energy management staff and teams to ensure that these are put into place and monitored. Energy managers are responsible for the work of a team of technical staff who make sure that the best possible energy efficiency (and water conservation) measures are used in council buildings.
