How to recover a file accidentally deleted | Expert guides | Web User When you delete a file in Windows, all that actually happens is the directory entry and the allocation data for it get removed. The file itself doesn't physicallly go anywhere. This means it's very easy to retrieve, although the quicker you act the better your chances will be of a successful recovery. The more you use your computer, the greater the risk that your deleted file will get overwritten by new data, making it much harder to retrieve. And whatever you do, don't defrag your hard disk! There are lots of programs which can undelete data. Some excellent free tools worth trying are Recuva, Pandora Recovery and PC Inspector File Recovery. If you need to rescue data from a failed hard disk, try Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier. You could also use a cloning tool such as Easeus Disk Copy to back up the entire drive before it becomes too unstable. If you need to recover lost partitions, give TestDisk a try.
