Making Twitter a more versatile tool More than just a flavor of the month In a recent discussion on a LinkedIn forum for Learning, Education, and Training Professionals, someone posed the question: “Is anyone using Twitter as a training tool?” I was surprised to see h0w polarized the conversation became. Many of those who derided the suggestion argued that Twitter’s 140 character limit curtails or outright prevents its use in training because you can’t have a meaningful discussion in 140 characters or less. Quite a few people seemed to feel that Twitter’s just another flash-in-the-pan tool. Pearltree: a bookmarking and visualization tool Pearltree is a social bookmarking tool that allows you to organize your Web pages and easily find pages that others have bookmarked. The technology (or what are my powers?) As shown in the video, Pearltree is both a bookmarking and a visualization tool. As you create Pearltrees (analogous to lists or folders), you’re able to see the connections between your trees and the trees of other users. Your view expands to reveal other Pearltrees on related topics. You also can find related Pearltrees by using the search field. In my hands, this allowed me to find the more relevant Pearltrees. You can add the Pearltrees that others have created to your own Pearltree and your expanded Pearltree will receive updates each time new pearls are added to these Pearltrees. Free Mind Mapping Software There are a few advantages to creating your mind maps with computer software. Here are a few: It saves time! So it seems great eh? This is because it has been proven that your brain connects to your hand and makes links with what you are writing. So what it all comes down to is this: If you are using mind maps in a work environment to plan, organise and systemise, you may be better of with free mind mapping software. Personally, I prefer drawing but that's just me :) If you think you are going to be using mind maps a lot and would like to have a more advanced and state of the art software with which to create your mind maps, you may want to check out the mind mapping software page. Personal Learning Networks Recently, I did a special guest post on Buffy Hamilton's amazing blog regarding Personal Learning Networks. While I didn't want to rehash all of that here, I did want to share who some of my vital members were for those looking to start their own PLN.
