Volcanic explosions expected in Chile quake's wake - environment Besides aftershocks, Chile's magnitude 8.8 earthquake on 27 February may also leave a legacy of volcanic explosions. "We expect to see an upsurge in volcanic activity over the next 12 months," says David Pyle, a volcanologist at the University of Oxford. Charles Darwin was among the first people to suggest a link between large earthquakes and increased volcanic activity. In his records, he notes that a large earthquake off Chile's coastline in February 1835 appeared to resurrect previously inactive volcanoes, and cause active ones to increase their eruption rates. Last year, Pyle and his colleagues confirmed that this was a real effect in Chile, showing that increases in volcanic activity have occurred following other large earthquakes along its coastline. Last week's earthquake occurred on the same section of fault that caused the earthquake Darwin observed in 1835. Pyle stresses that the risk to local people from this extra volcanism is likely to be minimal. More From New Scientist

Bachelet Appeals for Aid as Aftershocks Continue | Americas | En Rescue workers in Chile braved aftershocks as strong as 6.9 on the Richter scale to search for survivors amid the rubble on Sunday as the country's president gave the military control over security in the hard-hit city of Concepcion. As the death toll rose to more than 700 in one of the most powerful earthquakes in a century, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet also appealed for international aid. President Michelle Bachelet called on the public and the private sector in Chile to help with the recovery effort as offers of aid poured in from around the globe. She said that as Chile faces the aftermath of Saturday's earthquake, the country needs help from all civil and military authorities that are able as well as the private sector. She says the recovery effort would last well into the future. The 8.8 magnitude quake damaged or destroyed more than a million homes. Chile asks those who have Net, phones to share - Chile earthquak The Chilean Red Cross is asking those who do have power and Internet service to share it with others following Saturday's 8.8-magnitude earthquake, which has left some with phone and Internet service, including wireless access to the Web. "Share your Wi-fi with residents for them to inform and communicate," said the Chilean Red Cross on Twitter, the short-messaging blog which has been a key communications link for Chile since the quake struck Saturday. Chile's communications infrastructure is much more technologically advanced than Haiti's, which suffered a near-total collapse as a result of the Jan. 12 earthquake there. Still, "The country’s telecommunications have been badly hit, especially in Bio Bio and Maule, the two regions worst affected" near the quake's epicenter, said Lucia Bibolini, a senior researcher for BuddeComm, a global telecommunications research firm, in a report Sunday. Maule, a region south of the capital Santiago, had the most confirmed deaths on Sunday: 541.

Marc Cooper » Blog Archive » Chilean Navy May Have Contributed t Here’s one eerie similarity between the disasters in New Orleans and Chile. Just as more people died in Katrina not from the hurricane but from the broken levees, it may turn out that as many or more Chileans died from an under-reported tsunami than they did from direct damage from the quake. And the Chilean Navy may bear some responsibilities in this by not having adequately warned those living along a 100 mile stretch of national coastline that a huge wave was headed their way. John Dinges, former NPR news manager and someone who has followed and reported the Chile story for the last 4 decades has the details here. Meanwhile, nearly 72 hours after the quake the social crisis in Chile seems to be mounting instead of abating. Sporadic looting by the poorer half of Chile has flashed in several cities and the vivid class hatreds that have fueled Chilean politics for so many decades are starting to resurface. It’s all so damn predictable.

Marc Cooper » Blog Archive » Chile’s Deeper Faultlines Since the moment the monster quake hit in Chile I sort of self-appointed myself as a translator/aggregator for Chile-related Twitter activity. You can find my long list of tweets here. I’m a former translator to Chilean president Salvador Allende and have been married into a Chilean family for 36 years so it’s a place I know something about. Now, I’m going to take a few minutes out to offer at least a bit of a deeper analysis. Pointless twaddle. Chile is also a third world country, but a more developed one and with a superstructure light years ahead of Haiti. Even the Chilean government participated in this fantasy by initially saying it didn’t need foreign aid. It is impossible this early on and from this far away to make any serious judgment on the response of the Chilean government. But in the days to come there are a few points we have to keep in mind. First, this is a full-on catastrophe that would rend the social fabric of any society.

24 Hours Later: Normality in Chile is All Relative « Eat Wine I slept like a baby last night. 10 hours to be exact. I never do that. I awoke at 6:30 am to two soft tremors that rocked the building like a boat. At 8:30 am, it felt like any Sunday morning. Church bells tolled for mass. I decided to go for a walk and try my luck at my Sunday feria, farmers market, to stock up on fresh produce. One casero, who sells me my favorite free range eggs, laughed and said, “look gringa, after all these years here, you have officially been indoctrinated to what it means to live in Chile. Loading up on lettuce and broccoli, my casero Roberto said two walls collapsed in his house and he had to hold onto the steel infrastructure while shielding himself from falling objects. A simple trip to the farmers market turned into this profoundly moving experience for me. Politics aside, I personally really like President Bachelet and her demeanor. But she asked to expresar solidarity. For me, there’s no doubt this country is and will do it.

Death toll in Chile earthquake close to 400, officials say - CNN Looting reported after quake Concepcion under curfew because of looting Death toll from Chilean quake rises to more than 700, president says Supermarkets will give away supplies on hand to quake victims, president says More than 90 aftershocks recorded, a day after massive quake shook Chile Santiago, Chile (CNN) -- Heavily populated parts of Chile still were without water service and electricity Sunday night because of Saturday's 8.8-magnitude earthquake, and reports of looting raised fears about security in some areas. The nation's hardest-hit major city, Concepcion, declared an overnight curfew. The death count from the earthquake doubled on Sunday from a day earlier, to 708 deaths. Calling Saturday morning's quake an "unthinkable disaster," Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said a state of catastrophe in the hardest-hit regions would continue, allowing for the restoration of order and speedy distribution of aid. Lessons From Haiti Will Aid Chile Earlier today Chile experienced a massive earthquake (you can see images of the damage on The BIg Picture). Now, just hours after the event online disaster relief sites are being spun up to aid the survivors. These are all variations on sites that were created to help Haiti survivors. Google quickly sprang into action reusing many Haiti built-tools: Crisis Response – This serves as a portal for all of Google’s efforts. Person Finder: Chile Earthquake – Built on Google’s AppEngine, this app aims to let people enter and retrieve information about people on the ground. Mapmaker Download – Google’s Mapmaker allows you to map the world from home. The Crisis Mappers have also reacted quickly. I have written about how these disaster-relief applications were used in Haiti and the people behind them. If you want to help Donate, help out online, go to a CrisisCamp (there’s one happening in DC today) or spend some time working on the maps of Chile at Mapmaker or Open Street Map.
