Enter a Stunning Exploration of Light and Space A new audiovisual installation called Parallels is turning space itself into a canvas. Created by Nonotak Studio (a.k.a. Takami Nakamoto and Noemi Schipfer) and commissioned for the ongoing STRP Biennial in Eindhoven, Netherlands, the piece invites viewers to walk around and interrupt the light projections that distort and abstract the surrounding room. Parallels expands on Nonotak Studio's previous pieces, including Daydream, which explore light as a solid material and create immersive, sensory experiences for the viewer. Unlike their Daydream series, this piece moves away from on-screen projections. "[Parallels] is strongly connected to the space in which it takes place; it lives within it.

The Living City This is a transcript of a talk delivered at Cognitive Cities, a conference on the future of cities held in Berlin on 26th Feb 2011. Hello. I’m going to show you some research projects by myself and other colleagues at CASA, which concern what I call the living city. New English Library The New English Library was a United Kingdom book publishing company, which became an imprint of Hodder Headline. History New English Library (NEL) was created in 1961 by the Times Mirror Company of Los Angeles, with the takeover of two small British paperback companies, Ace Books Ltd and Four Square Books Ltd, as a complement to its 1960 acquisition of New American Library in the United States. The imprint was sold in 1981 to Hodder & Stoughton, and became part of the merged Hodder Headline in 1993. The brand continued as a mass-market imprint for Hodder Headline, focussing on thrillers and horror, until 2004 when it was dropped following Hodder's assimilation into the Hachette Livre group, and a single Hodder & Stoughton paperback list was created, combining the NEL titles then in print with those in Hodder's previous Coronet (mainstream) and Flame (young and contemporary) paperback lines. The architecture of mindbending metaphysical horror Can a room drive you mad? Earlier this year the architect and educator Sam Jacob, formerly of FAT, asked me to run a series of book club events for the Architectural Association's Night School, of which he is director. The last of the three weekly sessions would look at my own novel Care of Wooden Floors, a dark farce about a maddening minimalist apartment, while the other two could be about anything I wanted, so long as they shared an architectural theme. Perhaps this sounds like a challenge, but the theme was in fact easy to pick: malign interiors. Literature is full of harmful, hostile spaces, rooms and environments that qualify as villains in their own right. The discussions were such a success that the Malign Interiors Book Club is back for a second bout in September, so here's a recap of what we covered first time around: rooms that drive you crazy.
