To address the molecular mechanisms underlying environmental adaptation, we have utilized a Drosophila melanogaster line, termed “Dark-fly”, which has been maintained in constant dark conditions for 57 years (1400 generations). We found that Dark-fly exhibited higher fecundity in dark than in light conditions, indicating that Dark-fly possesses some traits advantageous in darkness. The Young Girl Who's Best Friends with African Wildlife Born in Africa to French wildlife photographer parents, Tippi Degré had a most unusual childhood. The young girl grew up in the African desert and developed an uncommon bond with many untamed animals including a 28-year old African elephant named Abu, lion cubs, giraffes, an Ostrich, a mongoose, crocodiles, a baby zebra, a cheetah, giant bullfrogs, and even a snake. Africa was her home for many years and Tippi became friends with the ferocious animals and tribespeople of Namibia. Parents Alain Degré and Sylvie Robert documented Tippi's life and relationships with the African wildlife and transformed those moments into captivating books and movies. Looking past some fairly obvious and natural parental worries, Tippi had the most amazing upbringing. via [Messy Nessy Chic] Thanks for the tip, Mindy!

Stickleback genomes reveal path of evolution Tim Howes, Stanford University Freshwater sticklebacks such as this one have evolved from marine ancestors on many different occasions. Scientists have pinpointed mutations that may help a tiny armoured fish to evolve quickly between saltwater and freshwater forms. Since the last ice age ended about 10,000 years ago, ocean-dwelling threespine sticklebacks have repeatedly colonized streams and lakes worldwide. David Kingsley, an evolutionary biologist at Stanford University in California, and his colleagues have now identified the DNA differences that distinguish ocean and freshwater sticklebacks around the world. To trace the key DNA differences, the researchers sequenced the entire genetic code of 21 sticklebacks from ocean and freshwater sources on three continents. The researchers found that, over most of the genomes, freshwater sticklebacks were most similar to their nearest ocean-dwelling neighbours. Switching controls

Morphace This is the website of the 3D Basel Face Model (BFM) published by the Computer Science department of the University of Basel. The Morphable Model is calculated from registered 3D scans of 100 male and 100 female faces. We distribute the BFM plus additional data for applications and experiments in academic research and education. The model and its construction are detailed in the paper " A 3D Face Model for Pose and Illumination Invariant Face Recognition ". 37,000 years old: Earliest form of wall art discovered Anthropologists working in southern France have determined that a 1.5 metric ton block of engraved limestone constitutes the earliest evidence of wall art. Their research, reported in the most recent edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows the piece to be approximately 37,000 years old and offers rich evidence of the role art played in the daily lives of Early Aurignacian humans. The research team, comprised of more than a dozen scientists from American and European universities and research institutions, has been excavating at the site of the discovery—Abri Castanet—for the past 15 years. Abri Castanet and its sister site Abri Blanchard have long been recognized as being among the oldest sites in Eurasia bearing artifacts of human symbolism. Hundreds of personal ornaments have been discovered, including pierced animal teeth, pierced shells, ivory and soapstone beads, engravings, and paintings on limestone slabs.

Illustrations Of Unusual And Rarely Spoken Words Recumbentibus—A knockout punch, either verbal or physical. The Irish illustration duo of James and Michael Fizgarald, or also known as The Project Twins, have come up with a series of illustrations that visually represent rarely spoken and heard of words. In their series called ‘A-Z of Unusual Words’, the meaning of the words have been visually defined in the form of a whimsical poster—which can be purchased on their website. Here are some of their ‘informative’ posters: Acersecomic—A Person whose hair has never been cut. Harmartia—The character flaw or error of a tragic hero. Jettatura—The casting of an evil eye Pogonotrophy—The act of cultivating, or growing and grooming, a mustache, beard, sideburns or other facial hair. Ostentiferious—Bring omens or unnatural or supernatural manisfestations. Scripturient—Possessing a violent desire to write. Ultracrepidarian—A person who gives opinions and advice on matters outside of one’s knowledge. Yonderly—Mentally or emotionally distant; absent-minded

Sharing Colors to Survive At first glance, the vibrantly colored and patterned butterflies living in Central and South America wouldn’t seem to have much in common with that notorious beast of burden – the mule. In a paper published last week in Nature, though, researchers found that different species of Heliconius butterflies use interbreeding to acquire colorful wing patterns that repel predators. This may be a more rapid way of evolving desired wing colors and patterns than starting from scratch. Heliconius butterflies use interbreeding to share beneficial colors and patterns. Crossing different animal species – known in the scientific world as hybridization – is commonly known as an evolutionary dead end. Yet in the case of butterfly hybridization, Heliconius species seem to be spreading gene regions that control wing pattern and color, says Nature paper co-author and NC State postdoctoral researcher Heather Hines, showing that these hybrid couplings can at times be advantageous.

38 Wonderful Foreign Words We Could Use in English Sometimes we must turn to other languages to find le mot juste. Here's a bunch of foreign words with no direct English equivalent. A face badly in need of a fist. This Japanese slang term describes the experience of seeing a woman who appears pretty from behind but not from the front. An amazing dream. It’s nice to know that the Japanese think enough of the act of gazing vacantly into the distance without thinking to give it a name. Leave it to the Brazilians to come up with a word for “tenderly running your fingers through your lover’s hair.” The result of attempting to revive an unworkable relationship. A word that would aptly describe the prevailing fashion trend among American men under 40, it means one who wears the shirt tail outside of his trousers. To make a squeaking sound by sucking air past the lips in order to gain the attention of a dog or child. Ever been flustered to the point where you can’t function or finish what you were doing? Maybe Goldilocks was Swedish?

Gene behind van Gogh’s sunflowers pinpointed John Burke/UGA;Christie's Images/CORBIS Researchers have identified the gene responsible for the ‘double-flowered’ (B) variations (black arrows in main picture) captured in Vincent van Gogh’s 1888 painting Sunflowers. A normal sunflower (A) and another mutation with ‘tubular’ florets (C) are shown for comparison. A team of plant biologists has identified the gene responsible for the ‘double-flower’ mutation immortalized by Vincent van Gogh in his iconic Sunflowers series. Van Gogh’s 1888 series includes one painting, now at the National Gallery in London, in which many of the flowers depicted lack the broad dark centre characteristic of sunflowers and instead comprise mainly golden petals. This was not simply artistic licence on van Gogh’s part but a faithful reproduction of a mutant variety of sunflower. A wild sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is not so much a single flower as a composite of tiny florets. Previous studies had shown that HaCYC2c is highly expressed in ray flowers.

Four Noble Truths | Walks with Yogi Shambala Warrior Mind Training 6 (Photo credit: Triratna Photos) ” In my ten years as a Soto Zen Buddhist, I’ve considered the distinctions between activity and quiet at length. I have never been in danger of escaping to my cushion, of hiding behind a passive Buddhist face. I have a noisy mind, a restless body; my flaws have always been active ones. I envied the placid tempers of some of my fellow trainees. Fear diminishes me, makes me no bigger than that part of me which fears.
