Irregular verbs games Irregular verbs are the most important and at the same time for many students the most difficult part of learning English. These verbs are very common and if students learn them, their English improves radically. But they have to learn them! Recently Svetlana Kandybovich published a great game to help children learn irregular verbs. In this post, there are three games to make the learning of irregular verbs more enjoyable. Irregular verbs games – Crosses and Noughts Print the following worksheet. Read the list of the irregular verbs with the students to ensure that they pronounce the verbs correctly. Five minutes later, ask the students to work in pairs and go through the grid line by line and say the past tense and past participle of the verbs. Now they play crosses and noughts. Let the students play for four minutes. Once they finish, students turn the cards with the verbs face up, and take a pen or pencil. Irregular verbs games – Sprint You need the worksheet again.

Ask your students to solve the crossword and word search and then check their answers. In the task that follows, students should complete the sentences using the correct prepositions. If you have a monolingual class and you speak their mother tongue, you could ask them to translate the sentences. In the last task on page four, students have to place the pieces of furniture in the room.

Video for the English classroom For the language teacher, YouTube may be nothing less than one of the best sources of material the classroom has ever seen. In this article, I would like to share 12 clips that I have used in my own classroom. I hope that each clip will be representative of a type of video that may be of particular interest to language teachers. Note: In this article, we will be examining a number of clips that are hosted on the video-sharing site YouTube. Unfortunately, the site is blocked in a number of countries and in such cases the clips will not be accessible. 1. Some poems are best appreciated when they are heard rather than read. For language teachers, a visual element increases the possibilities for using any text in the classroom. 2. This is an example of ‘kinetic typography’ – the technical name for a moving text. Note how the text bombards the eyes in a range of orientations, sizes, font- types, colour and movement. Kinetic typography requires ‘space-time reading’ on the part of the viewer.

School subjects - speaking activities Speaking activities are the most important component of English courses using communicative approach. However, it is very difficult to find quality speaking activities that would work. That is why I would like to publish a speaking activity here once a week. All the activities will be based on the recommendations given by Keith S. Folse in his wonderful book The Art of Teaching Speaking. ADVERT: In the first post I offer you two pair speaking activities using school subjects and the verb HAVE. School subjects – language for the activity To be able to complete the task successfully, students will need the following sets of language: the verb HAVE (or have got) and the names of the school subjects. If you have not taught the school subjects yet, it is necessary to do so before you start the speaking activities. The other set of language your students need to know is the usage of the verb HAVE for questions like “What subject has she got on Monday?” School subjects – speaking activities
