Global Energy Industry Hit In “Night Dragon” Attacks In 2010 McAfee Labs processed an average of almost 55,000 pieces of new malware every day. That nearly mind-numbing amount makes it difficult for any particular attack to stand out. Today, however, I want to highlight one large scale attack that is a clear example of how cybercrime has evolved from something of a hobbyist affair to a very professional activity. We call this specific attack “Night Dragon.” Starting in November 2009, covert cyberattacks were launched against several global oil, energy, and petrochemical companies. The attackers targeted proprietary operations and project-financing information on oil and gas field bids and operations. McAfee has identified the tools, techniques, and network activities used in these attacks, which continue on to this day. While the list above may seem impressive to the layperson, these methods and tools are relatively unsophisticated. Anatomy Of The Night Dragon Attack We have also taken a close look at who might be behind these attacks.

17 Ways to Visualize the Twitter Universe | FlowingData I just created a new Twitter account, and it got me to thinking about all the data visualization I've seen for Twitter tweets. I felt like I'd seen a lot, and it turns out there are quite a few. Here they are grouped into four categories - network diagrams, maps, analytics, and abstract. Network Diagrams Twitter is a social network with friends (and strangers) linking up with each other and sharing tweets aplenty. Twitter Browser Twitter Social Network Analysis The ebiquity group did some cluster analysis and managed to group tweets by topic. Twitter Vrienden Twitter in Red I'm not completely sure how to read this one. Twitter Network Maps When you create a Twitter account, you can enter where you are located, so in my case, I put New York. TwiterVision Yeah, it's a Google Maps mashup, but a bit better than what you're used to seeing. TwitterVision3d It's TwitterVision taken to the next dimension. IPads Storm the Enterprise CIO.com Network World - As global accounts director at Altus, Inc., Michelle Klatt's job is to visit Fortune 500 companies and demonstrate her firm's video management software. When the iPad came out a year ago, she was all over it. "I was one of the first salespeople to get one," she says. "I fought very hard.'' Her company's videos look "absolutely beautiful" on the iPad, she says. And once the sales presentation is over, she uses her iPad to update the Salesforce.com entry for the sales prospect, log the meeting, send out follow-up e-mails, manage her LinkedIn contacts, and do other job-related paperwork. Five iPAD safety tips "I do everything on the iPad," she says. Klatt is at the leading edge of a growing wave of enterprise customers who are adopting the iPad for business use. IE Fix: Bicubic Scaling for Images Devthought had a little CSS tip the other day that is definitely worth repeating. It's not new, it's just an important little trick to know. And here it is: If you use width or height tags to resize images in your markup, IE will ensure they look incredibly awful unless you use this little snippet. In general, resizing images in the browser isn't recommended, but of course there are always exceptions. Share On California Supreme Court Rules That a ZIP Code is Personal Identification Information -- Pineda v. Williams-Sonoma [Post by Venkat Balasubramani] Pineda v. Williams-Sonoma, S178241 (Cal. Supreme Court; Feb. 10, 2011) Plaintiff made a purchase at Williams-Sonoma and when she went to pay, the cashier asked for plaintiff’s ZIP code. Plaintiff sued under the Song-Beverly Credit Card Act (the Credit Card Act) which prohibits a store that accepts credit cards from: request[ing], or requir[ing] as a condition to accepting the credit card as payment…the cardholder to provide personal identification information, which the [store] records upon the credit card transaction form or otherwise. The statutes defines personal identification information as: information concerning the cardholder, other than information set forth on the credit card, and including, but not limited to, the cardholder’s address and telephone number. The trial court dismissed the claims, finding that a ZIP code does not fall under the definition of personal identification information, and the court of appeals affirmed. Other coverage:

Building Fast Client-side Searches Yesterday we released a new people selector widget (which we’ve been calling Bo Selecta internally). This widget downloads a list of all of your contacts, in JavaScript, in under 200ms (this is true even for members with 10,000+ contacts). In order to get this level of performance, we had to completely rethink how we send data from the server to the client. Server Side: Cache Everything To make this data available quickly from the server, we maintain and update a per-member cache in our database, where we store each member’s contact list in a text blob — this way it’s a single quick DB query to retrieve it. Testing the Performance of Different Data Formats Despite the fact that our backend system can deliver the contact list data very quickly, we still don’t want to unnecessarily fetch it for each page load. With this goal in mind, we started testing various data formats, and recording the average amount of time it took to download and parse each one. Going Custom Searching The End Result

Miniature lasers could help launch new age of the Internet A new laser device created at the University of Central Florida could make high-speed computing faster and more reliable, opening the door to a new age of the Internet. Professor Dennis Deppe's miniature laser diode emits more intense light than those currently used. The light emits at a single wavelength, making it ideal for use in compact disc players, laser pointers and optical mice for computers, in addition to high-speed data transmission. Until now, the biggest challenge has been the failure rate of these tiny devices. They don't work very well when they face huge workloads; the stress makes them crack. The smaller size and elimination of non-semiconductor materials means the new devices could potentially be used in heavy data transmission, which is critical in developing the next generation of the Internet. "The new laser diodes represent a sharp departure from past commercial devices in how they are made," Deppe said from his lab inside the College of Optics and Photonics.
