J.C. Leyendecker Prints and Posters - Global Gallery J.C. Leyendecker Born in Montabaur, Germany, and came to America at the age of eight. Showing an early interest in painting, he got his first job at the age of sixteen (16) in a Chicago engraving house on the strength of some large pictures he had painted on kitchen oilcloth. Upon his return, as a thoroughly trained artist with immense technical facility, Leyendecker had no difficulty in obtaining top commissions for advertising illustrations and cover designs for the leading publications. Joseph Christian Leyendecker became a noted American illustrator and graphic designer who, between 1896 and 1950, painted more than four hundred magazine covers, most of them of an idealized America. He particularly hit his stride in the 1930’s with fashion advertising, selling lifestyle with product.

Will Terry - Children's Book Illustrator Fire Paintings: Artist Draws With Flames And Soot Steven Spazuk is a Canada-based artist who uses candle soot to create elegant drawings. After depositing soot on his media with a candle or torch, he etches lines and patterns in the soot with pencils and feathers. Though Spazuk has spent the last 14 years developing and perfecting his soot painting technique, the creation process always has an element of random spontaneity and improvisation. More info: spazuk.com | Youtube | Facebook (h/t: lustik, colossal) When asked by Bored Panda about how he came up with the idea to paint with soot, Spazuk said; “The truth is that I dreamt of it. I was in a gallery (in my dream) and was looking at that black and white landscape and I knew that it was done with fire and completely understood the technique.” “In the morning when I woke up I remembered that dream and started to experiment. “It was then that I immediately knew that drawing with soot would work. “The biggest challenge in the beginning was to keep the drawings intact. Now that we have to boring stuff out of the way - read on if you want to find out details like the fact that I’ve been hit by not one but two cars...I’m just not that easy to kill...or the fact that I can state all 44 prepositions in alphabetical order in 20 seconds from memory - a bet I had with my father when I was in 7th grade that I can’t seem to shake...or that my mom taught John Lithgow in the third grade and she used to tell us that he was “very quiet” and “not at all like an actor”...or how I saved our family of seven from drowning in the dismal swamp in North Carolina when I was 14 - true story. I used to pretend to read when I was in elementary school because I hated reading so much. I love to blog! I love to vlog! I love to teach. I love to illustrate. I love to work on my own projects. I love my family. Guest Speaking: BYU Idaho SCBWI Utah

A Lesson on Character Design by 'SpongeBob' Artist Robertryan Cory Robert Ryan Cory, a veteran character designer on SpongeBob SquarePants and Secret Mountain Fort Awesome, has posted a helpful set of notes from a character design lecture he presented recently to CalArts animation students. How do I become … an illustrator | Money Cliff Wright had spent years painting woodland animals for children's book's when the call came from publisher Bloomsbury. "They wanted me to illustrate the cover of a book called Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," he says. "I'd never heard of Harry Potter at that point, so it was just another job for me." The first book in JK Rowling's series had been illustrated by a young graduate from art college and, following its success, the publisher had decided to recruit a more experienced illustrator for the sequel. "I didn't have time to read the whole manuscript so I went with their suggestion of the flying car," says Wright, 49. Wright was the first to depict Hogwarts Castle, Hedwig the owl, the flying Ford Anglia and the airborne Hippogriff, and those rough sketches are now collectors' items – the original artwork for Chamber of Secrets raised £85,000 at auction. "A lot of artists can't draw children because their energy is so difficult to capture," he says.
