Light décide d'utiliser le Death Note pour exterminer les criminels, dans le but d'éradiquer le Mal et de bâtir un monde parfait dont il sera le dieu. Les Death Note appartiennent à la base aux dieux de la mort, et s'ils le perdent, ils se voient dans l'obligation de rester avec l'humain le possédant jusqu'à sa mort pour le récupérer.
