Unlike many of the books I feature on 50 Watts, this one is in print. You should buy it. Andrew Salgado // The Bewildered Pursuit, 2012 Oil on canvas // 140x190cm The In Order to Rebuild exhibition at the Dosi Gallery in Korea (20 July /18 August 2012, 202-2 Kwangan 2 dong, Suyoung-gu, Busan, Korea) features the work of Andrew Salgado, the London based painter from Canada known for his eerie paintings that are preoccupied with universal themes such as identity, sexuality and convalescence. He considers himself a storyteller and admits to his attraction to faces. 'I am attracted to interesting faces and I am certainly no stranger to melodrama. I like dramatic lighting and faces that immediately grab my attention and the attention of the viewer,''he says. Salgado avoids subjects whose emotions are easily definable.
Explosions of Color from a Chinese Artist
Hua Tunan is a rising artist in China. Combining the traditional elements of Chinese art and culture with a modern twist, Hua brings about beautiful explosions on the canvas. Based out of Foshan, Hua (also known as 画图男) does performance and street art in addition to his paintings. His work has gathered the attention of companies such as Volvo, who flew him out to Zurich to do graffiti art on one of their blank cars for a performance. As his art continues to stimulate viewers, we at Visual News will keep an eye on him and his work at Chinese creative agency NeochaEDGE.
Judith Ann Braun's Fingers Are Magical
With an art career spanning more than three decades, Judith Ann Braun has tested the limits of her artistic musculature. She began as a self-described “realistic figure painter,” and worked through the struggles common to anyone who endeavors upon an artistic pursuit, that of searching for one’s own voice in the chosen medium. Fast forward to the 21st century where the evolution of Braun’s work has brought us to the Fingerings series, a collection of charcoal dust landscapes and abstracts “painted” using not brushes but her fingertips. Braun has a specific interest in symmetry, as evidenced by the patterns she follows in a number of the Fingerings pieces as well as work in the Symmetrical Procedures collection.

Part of the Holy Land, Egypt offers a fascinating mixture of ancient pyramids, temples and other religious monuments. There are numerous possibilities to explore Egypt from desert treks to trips down the Nile or scuba diving in the Red Sea and along the Sinai coast. Cairo, which means “The Triumphant”, is home to the pyramids, sphinx and over 17 million residents within its metropolitan area. Luxor is often described as the world’s largest open air museum, built on the ancient city of Thebes. The Karnak temple complex, located near Luxor, is a collection of ancient temples, chapels and various other buildings.

In the 19th century, gentlemen used calling cards to formally introduce themselves to new acquaintances and to call upon friends and relatives in a dignified way. But there was another type of card used when a gentleman wanted to get the ball rolling with a lovely lady in a more casual way: the acquaintance card. According to The Encyclopedia of Ephemera, the acquaintance card was, “A novelty variant of the American calling card of the 1870s and 1880s,” and was “used by the less formal male in approaches to the less formal female.
