Its purpose is to provide a transition between, for example, a square base and a dome. Muqarnas is also frequently used to create a concave semi-vault above an entrance to a building or to provide a decorative cornice along the perimeters of a ceiling or beneath a balcony. Muqarnas compositions are very suitable for contemporary interpretations. The image on the right is a model that was made using the style that is typical for North Africa and Andalucia. By combining differently angled elements (e.g 30° or 60°) and having two versions of each, a great variety of designs can be made. This shows a muqarnas composition using a construction style that is typical for Iran and Central Asia. There are different traditions when it comes to what the curve of the muqarnas composition appears like. All the models on this page are made from card or cardboard.

Spot color In offset printing, a spot color is any color generated by an ink (pure or mixed) that is printed using a single run. When making a multi-color print with a spot color process, every spot color needs its own lithographic film. All the areas of the same spot color are printed using the same film, hence, using the same lithographic plate. The dot gain, hence the screen angle and line frequency, of a spot color vary according to its intended purpose. Spot lamination and UV coatings are sometimes referred to as 'spot colors', as they share the characteristics of requiring a separate lithographic film and print run. Computer methods[edit] There are various methods to incorporate rather sophisticated patterns of spot colors in the final prepress artwork. Optimizing usage[edit] Generally the cost and potential for problems for a print job increase as one adds more spot colors, due to the increased cost and complexity of added process inks and films, and requiring more runs per finished print.

Arabic geometry – page 1/2 A background to two-dimensional design – geometry and pattern A brief introduction to the history of Arabic or Islamic geometry is set out on the next page together with methods by which those geometries can be readily constructed using the traditional means of a straight edge and a pair of compasses. These first four illustrations are of Islamic geometric patterns that have been executed on different materials, respectively silver, stone, leather and glazed mosaic, and are commonly considered representative of Islamic design. But having said that, I believe it would be useful to begin this page with a note on the understanding we in the West have of Arabic or, perhaps more accurately, Islamic geometrical design as it is a wide field of study and there are many misconceptions about its origins, interpretation and character. The patterns with which we are familiar are to be found within a variety of Islamic cultures, but are often considered to be common to areas of Arab conquest.
