Home Page for Ancient History 26: Greece Introduction The Graduate Group in Ancient History is a program that coordinates a curriculum encompassing the whole of the ancient history of the Near East and the Mediterranean Basin. It has as its aim the preparation of candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Faculty from the following departments contribute to the curriculum: Anthropology, Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World, Classical Studies, History of Art, Religious Studies, History, and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. Students in the Graduate Group pursue the PhD degree. Facilities Penn offers superb resources for the study of ancient history. The Department of Classical Studies is the administrative home of the Graduate Group in Ancient History. The University of Pennsylvania has excellent research library facilities, including Van Pelt Library with its open stacks and Classics Seminar Room, the Henry C. The reader must not expect to find in it a compendious summary of the chief events in the history of ancient Greece. It is not intended to supply an "Outlines of Greek History." 2. If, then, by "Greek history" is to be understood the history of the lands occupied in later times by thd Greek race ( i.e. the Greek peninsula and the Aegean basin), the beginnirigs of the history must be carried back some 2000 years before Grote's proposed startingpoint. Did an Earthquake Destroy Ancient Greece? The grand Mycenaens, the first Greeks, inspired the legends of the Trojan Wars, "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey." Their culture abruptly declined around 1200 B.C., marking the start of a Dark Ages in Greece. The disappearance of the Mycenaens is a Mediterranean mystery. Leading explanations include warfare with invaders or uprising by lower classes. Some scientists also think one of the country's frequent earthquakes could have contributed to the culture's collapse. At the ruins of Tiryns, a fortified palace, geologists hope to find evidence to confirm whether an earthquake was a likely culprit. PHOTOS: 'Hell's Gate' Was Real Tiryns was one of the great Mycenaean cities. Hinzen and his colleagues have created a 3D model of Tiryns based on laser scans of the remaining structures. The work is complex, because many blocks were moved by amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in 1884 and later 20th-century restorations, Hinzen said.
