Fly Geyser - Not Quite of this World They look as if they were taken on another planet, or at least on the set of a new and very expensive science fiction movie. Yet these pictures are of the Fly Geyser which is very much of planet earth (Nevada, US to be exact). However – and herein lies the surprise – it is effectively man made. The geyser can be found in Hualapai Valley near Gerlach. It is a little seen phenomenon as the land upon which it sits is private. It can be seen from State Road 34 but unless you have permission the view from a distance is all you should attempt. Back in 1916 the owners of the place were looking for water in the hope of creating rich farmland in this desert area of the state. Yet it is not the geyser you see in the pictures here. Since the 60s the geyser has substantially developed – it now has the appearance of a huge multi-colored sculpture. The ponds are forming an ecosystem of their own. Image Credit Flickr User Michael Flick The water from the geyser is thrust skywards on a continual basis.

Social-Network-Map.png (PNG Image, 1000x2075 pixels) Update: Nico, the deaf shelter dog whose photo inspired online rescue community, has a new home in Indiana | L.A. Unleashed | Los Angeles Times Last year, guest blogger Janet Kinosian shared the story of Nico, a shelter dog who was rescued through the efforts of Southern California rescuers and a community of animal-loving Facebook users. Since then, Nico's story has gotten even better; here, Kinosian fills us in on what's been going on in the life of this hard-luck dog who became one of the luckiest couch potatoes in Indiana. Remember Nico, the defeated deaf white Dogo Argentino at South Los Angeles animal shelter -- who moved so many people with the sad photo of him first posted on Facebook? Nico, the forlorn animal who evoked the agony and utter defeat so many discarded animals must experience? Well, it's a joy to update you on Nico's life. Just look at these two photos side by side: Can this possibly be the same animal? Photos like the one on the left aren't anything new on the Web: Tens of thousands flood Facebook alone on a daily basis. And that's where the photo on the right comes in. -- Janet Kinosian

If tech companies made self-driving cars. The Joy of Tech is a comic about technology and pop culture, created by Nitrozac and Snaggy, and updated three times a week. We're very proud to be featured regularily on places like AllThingsD (from the people who publish The Wall Street Journal), Macworld UK magazine, PC Live magazine, and many others, both on the web and in print. We currently live on Vancouver Island, Canada, where we have a lovely perspective of the silicon valleys to the south.
