The 10 New Rules of Crisis Communications It’s common knowledge: Social media and the way individuals use the Internet has changed the rules of the game when it comes to crisis management. It’s no longer about communicating your message to the public but rather communicating your message with your audience, in real-time and with wide-open eyes and ears. The eyes are for monitoring and the ears are for listening. Little Red Riding Hood’s big bad wolf had big ears and big eyes and you’d better plan for your brand to have the same in a crisis. Otherwise, you’ll be faced with the public huffing and puffing and blowing your brand’s reputation right out of the water – or search results if you’d rather. So, if you’re new to the new rules of crisis communications, here’s a cheat-sheet of sorts, in an attempt to keep the underprepared on the right path: Communications are now a 2-way street, whether you want them to be or not.Real-time is not just a suggestion but an expectation of your audience.

Feedipedia: An on-line encyclopedia of animal feeds | Feedipedia - Animal Feed Resources Information System Dear Modern Farmer: Will My Chicken Coop Be Legal? Dear Modern Farmer, I’m ready to take the plunge and buy some chickens. But how do I know if it’s legal to put a chicken coop in my back yard? Do I need a permit? Thanks, Hen House Henrietta Dear Henrietta, I assume you mean a coop that will shelter and house a small number of birds in a typical urban or suburban residential backyard. As long as chickens are allowed in your zoning district (and not barred by any homeowners association rules), then you are likely able to have some sort of shelter or coop in your backyard. Not surprisingly, the regulation of chicken coops varies among communities. Some zoning codes are quite specific in how and where chicken coops must be built. Some zoning codes expressly state whether a building permit, zoning permit, site plan approval and/or some other authorization must first be obtained. Fortunately, many communities publish this information online. But sometimes, no matter what you do, people will complain. Kristen M. RelatedCulture

Crowdfunding Monday: CraftFund to Launch Equity Crowdfunding for Craft Beer Nowadays you can find craft beer at almost any corner bodega or grocery store. From coast to coast, craft breweries are disrupting the beer industry, accounting for 10 percent, or $10.2 billion of total beer sales, up from $8.7 billion in 2011. And now Milwaukee-based CraftFund hopes to help the craft sector grow by connecting breweries, as well as canning lines, hop farms and ale houses, with equity investment through its crowdfunding platform. While crowdfunding giants like Kickstarter and Indiegogo allow individuals to make small donations to nonprofits and businesses, CraftFund aims to make it easier for small breweries to source capital from the general public in exchange for equity online. The JOBS Act, which was signed into effect in April 2012, established a new legal framework for private share offerings including equity crowdfunding. CraftFund believes that the grassroots marriage of equity crowdfunding and craft brews will thrive as it has in the UK, where it is fully legal.

Will Avocado Beer Be The Next Big Food Trend? Just when you thought you’ve heard of it all – with the introduction of cronuts, and the ramen burger, now there’s an ‘Avocado Ale’. Sure, noshing on guac and chips with a choice brew is always a win in the summer, but stirring it all up into a hoppy ale is a novel idea. However, that’s exactly what Dieter Foerstner, a brewmaster who loves to experiment, did. Tomorrow at Angel City Brewery, as part of their inaugural Avocado Festival, beer drinkers in Los Angeles will be the first to taste the ‘Avocado Ale’. Foerstner created this unique blend using not only California avocados but also cilantro and other ingredients you’d typically find in guacamole. Don’t get your hopes up, looks like ‘Avocado Ale’ will just be a local favorite for now. Angel City Brewery

Tech start-up of the week: FoodCloud - Start Ups - Start-Ups FoodCloud is an innovative Dublin-based social enterprise set up by students that via a smartphone app links businesses that have surplus food to charities and local community groups so nothing goes to waste and it all goes to a good cause. The core team consists of Iseult Ward (founder), Emma Mooney (operations) and Alex Sloan (communications) as well as a dozen volunteers and the company was recently the winner of the SEI ‘Minnovation Award’. The team uses its technology to connect a rich network of local businesses and community organisations to ensure surplus food goes to the right places without the need for a physical food bank. Using the app or the website businesses who have registered with FoodCloud can upload details of their surplus food and the time period in which the food can be collected. The app then automatically sends a text message to the nearest community organisation in that area and they can collect the food. Waste not, want not How the FoodCloud platform works

National Flags Created From the Foods Each Country Is Commonly Associated With Feeling hungry? You will be after looking through this creative collection of food photography by Australian advertising agency WHYBIN\TBWA. To promote the Sydney International Food Festival, which is Australia’s largest food festival which had almost a million attendees last year and chefs from all over the world, the imaginative team re-created 17 national flags using foods common to each nation. Basil, pasta, and tomatoes create the stripes on Italy’s flag, while hot dogs and buns were used for the U.S., olives and feta cheese for Greece, and curries with rice for India and Indonesia. See Also Man Follows Girlfriend All Around the World What’s even more impressive than the simpler striped flags is seeing the clever ways the team improvised stars and symbols of the more complex flags. Above: Italy’s flag made from Basil, pasta, and tomatoes. Brazil’s flag made from banana leaf, limes, pineapple and passion fruit. China’s flag made from pittaya/dragon fruit and star fruit.
