Girl's Layered Skirt

Girl's Layered Skirt
Many of you commented that Lucy’s seersucker skirt last week would be great for Easter. So I got busy. And here it is. A tutorial for girls (and moms?) of all ages: It’s bouncy and girly and ruffly. Or sitting pretty and dainty, sort of. Asking Lucy to model for me is a grab bag of expressions. But enough rambling. Let’s get started. There are so many ways to make a skirt (check out the Tutorials section for more ideas). This one is a layered/ruffled/tiered skirt. FABRICS TO USE I absolutely love seersucker cotton (detailed info on that here). AMOUNT OF FABRIC This will vary on the size of skirt you’re making, but for a 4-5 year old (shown here), 1 yard of fabric is great. SIZINGThe skirt is made of tiers. For the skirt LENGTH* Decide how long you want your skirt to be….a couple inches above the knee? If you find that the skirt is too full – use smaller ratios on the numbers aboveIf you want the ruffles to be more full – increase the ratios above (make the ruffles 2.5 times as long, etc)

Felt Owl Ornaments I haven’t made that much this Christmas. I might make a few last minute gifts, but I feel I have to get most of the shopping out of the way first... especially the online stuff that needs to be shipped. And no outfits for the kids like last year. I’m giving myself a break. Aren’t I nice? But I did do a little felt hand sewing. Anyway, these are the little owl ornaments I made. Download Owl ornament and all you do is cut it out from felt and sew however you’d like. I love ‘em. Enjoy! *****NOTE: I forgot to mention on the pattern about ric rac.

Stuffed Kangaroo Tutorial Kangaroos this week... I made this big grey one who looks so huge next to the original (now safely on her way to the US). I promised you all the pattern for this project ~ you can find it here, sorry it is a bit scribbly and there is no scale on it but i don't think it matters too much ~ remember tho the smaller you make it the more fiddly it is. ~Now how to put it together~ The Joey and the mother are made in basically the same way, start with the Joey because you will need to put it in the pouch and sew it in (to make sure it fits) before you finish the adult. Start with your two front sections and sew (I blanket stitched) the centre seam from neck to tail - top to bottom. (this is me sewing in the car while i wait for the big girl to finish her piano lesson) Join in the first main body section starting at the base of the tail. From the base of the tail, sew along the length and keep going up and round its back ~ remember to leave a decent opening for stuffing.

Second Sewing Month Project: Upcycle Sheets into PJs - A Dose of the Delightful Okay, so it's not National Sewing Month anymore - not even close! But I'm determined to finish my original list of projects: Creating throw & lumbar pillows with piping & invisible zippersFinishing a set of pajamas I'm making out of old sheets (how Sound of Music of me!) and thisfree Colette bloomers patternCreating some fun drawstring bags using this free pattern from Purl Bee - I'd add a waterproof lining.Trying out at least one of Colette's fall clothing patterns once they're available (coming in the next few weeks!) Now I've done 2 out of 4! A few years ago, my mom was doing some spring cleaning and preparing several bags of goods for donation. I made the top using this easy Simplicity pajama pattern, and wanted to try out this free Colette Madeleine mini bloomers pattern for the bottoms. I have to admit, I was pretty daunted - I'd never done anything like making my own elastic casings or even making a buttonhole! I do, actually, have two arms!

The Rusty Bobbin: Duct Tape Double Rustybobn Makes a DTD (Duct Tape Double) I read about it, and wanted one for a long time. The whole process just seemed *icky* and I didn't think I'd be able to breath with all that tape on me. In fact, just thinking about it would almost bring on a panic attack. It ain't that bad... Mandatory reading: In fact, it was Neefer's web page that finally gave me the courage to try this thing. My supply list--most of this you will already have or can get cheap/free: A couple of rolls of duct tape (I only needed one, but YMMV). Procedure: Tear many, many strips of duct tape and stick them around the room so that you can grab them as needed. Don your disposable t-shirt or shopping bags Define the bust by wrapping a strip underneath and then crisscross. Wrap shoulders, then remaining areas horizontally Wrap a second layer vertically Mark your body landmarks--waist, hip, bust points with the Sharpie pen Use the scissors to cut the form at the center back. (Do I need to warn you to unplug it first???)

Fabric Envelopes I was provided product for this post, but all opinions are my own. I love quick and simple sewing projects. And I have one for you today - Fabric Envelopes! This would be a fun beginner-sewing project and a fun way to showcase cute fabric: Alright, here we go! You'll need two pieces of fabric, one for the outside and one for the lining. If you don't have an envelope die, you can hand-cut the shape as seen above. I was experimenting to see if I could cut fabric with the die. You'll need to cut one out of each fabric: Now for the sewing - - put the two pieces together, with the right sides facing each other and sew all the way around the edge, except you'll want to leave about 2 inches on one side un-sewn. Next you're going to turn the project right-side out by pulling it through the opening. Now just fold it into envelope shape and iron it down. That's it! If you're looking for a simple sewing project, this is one you can do! www.SugarBeeCrafts.com

No Sew, No Knots Fleece Edge What a week I have had – some good and some not so good. How about I start with the good. I think I mentioned the Joann’s fabric store in Grand Island, NE. is having a liquidation sale as they are opening a new store in another location in town and I guess they are not moving any of the merchandise from the old store to the new one so they have had very good sales going on. I found directions on the internet for making the throws without the knots you usually see. Here are the step by step photos and directions I used to make them. Step 2 - Cut 1” slits around the entire edge and a 2” square out of each corner. was cutting and either added a little to each 1” fringe or subtracted a little so I wouldn’t have a really skinny or really fat strip at the corners. After this step is done the rest could be finished sitting in my favorite chair and watching TV, listening to music or an audio book. Step 3 Cut a small slit about 1/2” to 3/4” from the end of each strip with a scissors.

Fabric Scraps: Projects & Storage Methods Fabric scraps... they collect in my house like dust bunnies when sewing season hits (yes.. I do have sewing seasons, LOL.) And when I sew.. Fast forward... frustration sets in b/c of a huge bin of scraps in ziplock bags is taking up space in my fabric closet. I just did that a month ago. So on the hunt I went... Let's start off by seeing different ideas of fabric scrap storage.... heads up: some blogs are not in English, but are still absolutely beautiful to look at! SweetJessie shares her space saving idea! Film in the Fridge not only shares with us her bowl storage technique (I simply LOVE the vintage casserole dish), she also shares some beautiful projects she has made with scraps. Jaime from Prudent Baby shares her beautiful scrap storage idea! CopyEPaste shares a pic of fabric storage in jars as well. Jodi over at Pleasant Home shows pics of how she utilizes her cutting table shelves for fabric storage. My friend Megan shared her fabric storage idea with above said group. scraps in..

Fabric Baskets To Make - Sewing I am always on the lookout for ways to better organize my life, especially my sewing and craft area. I keep hoping that this will allow me to more easily find the things that I need when I need them and keep the area looking nice in the meantime. I like the idea of fabric storage bins or baskets, but many of the ones sold in stores are very plain looking or made with that papery fabric that isn't durable (and most of them are boring). Thinking that making my own would kill two birds with one stone by creating storage while using up fabric from my stash, I started looking around for patterns and found a number of patterns available on the internet. Hanging Fabric Storage Baskets I love this idea of making fabric baskets with a sleeve on the back for hanging on a curtain rod! Tutorial: Fabric Basket This tutorial shows you how to make a soft-sided patchwork fabric basket with handles. Storage Basket This tutorial shows you how to make fabric storage bins with handles using two fabrics.

The BOOKKEEPER This is my FIRST project for Moda Bake Shop and I'm really excited to share it with you. One of my favorite things to do besides QUILTING and CRAFTING is READING! So, for Mother's Day this year my DH bought me an Amazon Kindle. I was sooo excited to get it early and I've already read three books and I'm in the middle of two more books. I just love this new technological wonder. It's amazing. The BOOKKEEPER can also hold any paperback book that measures less than 9 " x 6" and isn't too thick. The BOOKKEEPER could also be used as a handy little purse or sewing pouch. I hope you enjoy this project. 1 Moda Honey Bun (I used Mary Englebreits Baskets of Flowers for tutorial.
