The illusion of diversity Three firms control 89% of US soft drink sales. This dominance is obscured from us by the appearance of numerous choices on retailer shelves. Steve Hannaford refers to this as "pseudovariety," or the illusion of diversity, concealing a lack of real choice. To visualize the extent of pseudovariety in this industry the authors developed a cluster diagram to represent the number of soft drink brands and varieties found in the refrigerator cases of 94 Michigan retailers, along with their ownership and/or licensing connections. The outcome is impressive and showcases how the notion of variety is truly an illusion in the soft drink industry.

Afirma Mendiola: “No es posible hoy relacionarse con los datos históricos sin un algo grado de generalización (…) Uno puede buscar información y llenarse de ella, pero llega un momento que no hay mucho que hacer con la información, en el sentido de que va exigiendo ella misma construir conceptos (…) con un mayor grado de abstracción y generalidad” El conferencista llega a esta afirmación después de estudiar las crónicas de la conquista en México del siglo XVI e interesarse en cómo fueron escritas y producidas. Mendiola retoma este énfasis, para recuperar la importancia de la corporalidad en la construcción del conocimiento.
