PsyBlog’s 10 Most Popular Psychological Insights From 2012

How the mind works, the dark side of creativity and how to be a great leader: these and more… Here’s my review of the psychological insights covered here on PsyBlog in 2012 that have proved most popular with you, the readers. 1. How the mind works Never let it be said that the titles for my articles lack ambition! Insights included the fact that suppressing your thoughts is counter-productive, brainstorming doesn’t work and hallucinations are more common than you’d think. 2. Six factors seem to set apart the truly great leaders from the rest: decisiveness, competence, integrity, vision, persistence and, perhaps most surprisingly: modesty. We could really do with some more modest leaders, don’t you think? 3. Creativity is always a favourite topic here on PsyBlog but usually we’re talking about the positive aspects. In fact research suggests that creative individuals are also more likely to be arrogant, good liars, distrustful, dishonest and maybe just a little crazy—OK, let’s say eccentric.

6 Exercises To Strengthen Compassionate Leadership Disney has been known for its litigious nature in the past, going so far as to change copyright law in order to keep Mickey Mouse out of public domain. That's why it's kind of weird that a movie filmed at Disney World, unapproved by the Mouse House, even exists at all. After making a splash at Sundance this year, though, the intriguing Escape From Tomorrow appears to be heading for a theatrical release--and the first trailer is now online. First-time director Randy Moore shot the film at the Florida theme park, guerrilla-style, over a series of visits with his crew and an unknown cast. The hallucinatory Escape From Tomorrow tells the tale of a father completely losing his shit over the course of a day at a certain tourism Mecca.

Music Training and Neuroplasticity With our multi sensory brain, music harnesses powers of nature, culture, and mind. How much is the brain changed by the effects of music training and neuroplasticity? Music is one of the most demanding cognitive and neural challenges, requiring very accurate timing of multiple actions, precise interval control of pitch not involved in language, and multiple different ways of producing sound. Auditory and motor actions influence each other in a constant interplay, which is largely unknown. Brain Lesion Effects on Music All brain imaging is done in a time scale of seconds, but the brain functions in the scale of milliseconds. A lesion in the auditory cortex causes “amusia” where a patient can speak and understand everyday sounds, but cannot notice wrong notes in tunes, or remember melodies.Another case, a 71-year-old cellist, had encephalitis and lost ordinary memory, but remembers music. But, recent research shows that when studying infants these differences do not necessarily exist.

Great Recycled Craft- Yarn Wrapped Bottles with Decoupage! Do you like to craft with recycled items? I have huge collections of glass bottles in my storage because I never know what might come to mind. And there is nothing better than free craft supplies! A bright sunny project for a warm summer day. For this project I used: 3 Glass Snapple Bottles (cleaned) Yarn in three colors Decorative Napkins Mod Podge (Matte) White glue Silk Flowers Start at the bottom of the bottle, adding white glue and then wrapping it with yarn. Keep wrapping and gluing the yarn until you get all the way to the top. I used an off white yarn, bright green, and blue. Select a pattern from some designer napkins. Paint the section of the bottle that will have the design on it with a good coating of Mod Podge, and then press the design onto it. Here is the white bottle sitting to dry. I found that the lighter colored yarn had a neater effect, but they all came out pretty. The final touch was to add pretty ribbons to the tops of the jars and add some silk flowers.

30 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Die {Via studioflowerpower on etsy} “Rather than money, than fame, than love…give me truth.” ~ Thoreau I woke up this morning and my life clock marked 30. My first sleep-deprived idea was to pack a small suitcase, get on the first train, move to another country, change my name, change my hair color (or get plastic surgery if needed), and start from scratch. When I don’t know how to deal with life, I hide sometimes. And others, I fight it. By now, I’m good at both: fighting and disappearing. A true warrior doesn’t feel forced to do either, but moves through and with and for life, like water. So after I washed my face and considered the costs of running and those of fighting, I decided to do neither and have some juice instead. {Alkaline Espresso / Click for recipe.} We are a constant process, an event, we’re change. How We Plant a Tomato Love Apple Farm's tomato plant sale will be held at 5311 Scotts Valley Drive in Scotts Valley (near Santa Cruz, CA) and will begin on Saturday, March 28, 2015 and continue EACH day until the end of May. How do we plant a tomato, you might ask? With a ridiculous amount of stuff in the hole, is the answer. I think they're just either too overwhelmed by the real stuff we put in there, or they actually believe we're throwing in a sink. This is how we plant a tomato. We started this beauty in our heated greenhouse in late January. The tomatoes are placed three feet apart. We get them from the restaurant we grow for, Manresa. If you're reticent to put the fish head in the hole, or simply can't get your mitts on any, we recommend using fish meal as a substitute. The next thing that goes into the hole are a couple of aspirin tablets and some crushed chicken egg shells. The aspirin is to help jump start the plant's immune system. Bone meal is the next to go into the hole. Good luck, folks!

How to print pictures on wood. Wax Paper transfer. I’m funny. Sometimes ha-ha funny, sometimes left-out-of-the-fridge-too-long funny. But as we all know, there are times for funny and times for seriousness. This is one such time. So this post will involve no funny. Because the information I’m about to introduce you to deserves a reverence that can’t be accomplished when diluted with hilarious jokes or cutting sarcasm. I’m going to teach you how to transfer any photograph or picture onto wood. You don’t know it yet, but this is the greatest day of your life. A couple of weeks ago I decided I wanted to try making something but it involved transferring a photo onto wood so I did a little research. So I kept looking for a cheaper (don’t have to buy anything) and simpler solution. It was the perfect solution and it works GREAT. All you need is a printer, a roll of waxed paper and a dream. That’s right. Cut a few sheets of wax paper to the size of a standard piece of printer paper. Find a smooth, light coloured piece of wood. You’ll be stunned.

The Dolphin Institute - Dolphin Research Echolocation is the process of detecting and identifying objects by emitting sounds, such as the broadband clicks used by dolphins, and listening to the echoes returning from objects reflecting those sounds. A recent discovery we made is that dolphins appear capable of directly perceiving the shapes of objects through echolocation. Prior to this finding, it had been generally assumed that dolphins learned to identify and recognize objects through echolocation by a process of associative learning-by comparing the echoes returning from targets with the visual appearance of those targets. Instead, our work has shown that echolocation can yield an immediate perception of the shapes of objects without any intervention by associative learning. Dolphins 'call each other by name' 22 July 2013Last updated at 19:02 ET By Rebecca Morelle Science reporter, BBC World Service The research sheds new light on the intelligence of dolphins Scientists have found further evidence that dolphins call each other by "name". Research has revealed that the marine mammals use a unique whistle to identify each other. A team from the University of St Andrews in Scotland found that when the animals hear their own call played back to them, they respond. The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr Vincent Janik, from the university's Sea Mammal Research Unit, said: "(Dolphins) live in this three-dimensional environment, offshore without any kind of landmarks and they need to stay together as a group. "These animals live in an environment where they need a very efficient system to stay in touch." Signature whistles It had been-long suspected that dolphins use distinctive whistles in much the same way that humans use names. Continue reading the main story

In fact, once you see how easy this homemade yogurt is to make, you will wonder why you haven’t made it yourself. I am all about easy and tasty! When the two combine, BAM, I love the results! Before I share the steps to make homemade yogurt, I think I should settle something first. Sometimes life pulls in too many directions and I just don’t have the time to spend an extra 15 minutes in the kitchen. Okay, okay, I will share. I love Seven Stars. But, you must promise to leave some if you go out and buy this yogurt. While most weeks I buy (in bulk through my food co-op) a case of Seven Stars Plain Whole Milk Yogurt, there are times it simply isn’t available or cost-wise I need to cut down on my food spending. I switched over to Stoneyfield Whole Milk Yogurt, but the cost for our family was just too much for the amount we consumed each week.

I haven’t been extremely consistent with it during pregnancy, but in normal life it is a staple in my diet (with coffee!). I love the smooth combo and the energy boost it gives me, all while making me feel full and satisfied for several hours. I was thinking about it though, and it’s not always convenient to eat a bowl of frosting in the morning. Sometimes I need a quick snack to eat while I’m working or on my way out the door, so I decided to alter the frosting recipe a bit and come up with a different type and texture of snack. This is a major winner. Coconut Oil and Peanut Butter Chips Directions: Mix all ingredients together until smooth. Note: You can decrease the amount of pb in the recipe if you like.
