Byung-Hun Min was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1955. Min started out as a musician and vocalist, then a student of electronic engineering, before finally discovering photography. He turned to study photography in his late 20’s at the Soon-tae Hong studio, from where he has pursued a successful career in photography. He has been awarded the Dong-A International Photography Salon’s silver medal (1984). Min’s black and white photography often represents nature and the environment; and his pictures aim to capture the essence of the Korean landscape.

Il est le fils d'Hermann Frank, décorateur d'origine allemande, et de Régina Zucker née dans une famille d'industriels. Ayant découvert la photographie dans sa douzième année, il entre, en 1941, en apprentissage chez Hermann Segesser : celui-ci lui fait découvrir Paul Klee. Robert Frank devient un photographe majeur des années 1950 et 1960, mais aussi un cinéaste indépendant engagé. Robert Frank a contribué au mouvement Beat, pratiquant la traversée des États-Unis ; Jack Kerouac a été l'un de ses compagnons de route lors d'un voyage en Floride en 1958. En 1969, il s'installe au bord de la mer avec une nouvelle compagne et s'éloigne de la photographie. En 1975, il enseigne en Californie.
Rinko Kawauchi
Les quarante photographies choisies pour cette exposition proviennent de la série « Utatane » - mot japonais qui définit un état mi-éveillé mi-endormi, rassemblées dans un des livres publiés par l’artiste. Elles témoignent de l’attention extrême que Rinko Kawauchi porte à toutes ces « petites voix qui lui chuchotent depuis son enfance » - selon sa propre expression, et qui sont à l’origine de cet univers intime déployé dans une esthétique singulière. « Utatane » nous donne à voir tout un univers constitué de fragments infimes, d’instants fugaces, qui illustrent la notion de naissance, de vie, de mort, et du temps qui passe. Quelle que soit son humeur, Rinko Kawauchi dit prendre des photos d’une manière aussi naturelle que boire du thé ; elle saisit les choses qui la frappent, que ce soient des insectes, des enfants ou des animaux, des détails anodins et des choses minuscules où la notion d’éphémère est souvent présente.

Rodney Graham – Vexation Island and Other Works 9 September – 25 September 1998 In the summer of 1997, Rodney Graham premiered his video installation Vexation Island at the 47th Venice Biennale. That exhibition, organized for the Canada Pavilion by the Art Gallery of York University, received rave reviews from the critics and the public alike. The AGYU is pleased to bring Vexation Island back to Canada as part of our exhibition of film and video works by Rodney Graham. Vexation Island is a cinematic “adventure film” which tells the story of an 18th-century Englishman who wakes to find himself stranded on a desert isle. This exhibition includes Vexation Island as well as Graham’s other film and video works, Coruscating Cinnamon Granules (1996), Halcion Sleep (1994), and Two Generators (1984). A catalogue, with essay by AGYU Assistant Curator Jack Liang, will accompany this exhibition.

Nobuyoshi Araki

Artiste extrêmement prolifique, Araki a essentiellement diffusé son œuvre sous forme d'albums. Biographie[modifier | modifier le code] Araki est né et a grandi dans quartier de Minowa dans la ville basse de Tokyo. Diplômé du département d'ingénierie de l'université de Chiba en 1963, avec une spécialisation en photo et mise en scène de cinéma, il débute sa carrière de photographe dans l'agence de publicité Dentsū. En 1974, il fonde avec Fukase Masahisa, Tōmatsu Shōmei, Hosoe Eikō et Moriyama Daidō l’école de photographie Workshop. En 1977, il quitte le quartier de son enfance pour s'installer à Komae dans la banlieue ouest de la capitale. En 1990, son épouse Yōko meurt d'un cancer de l'utérus.
