Why Nate Silver Can Save Math Education in America Ian Hill/Thinkstock/Penguin By Nikhil Goyal Call it “The Triumph of Nerds.” Poll statisticians have risen to rock star status. One of the most famous is New York Times’ wunderkind Nate Silver — or as Jon Stewart put it, “Lord and god of the algorithm.” Silver, who first gained notoriety for forecasting the performance of Major League Baseball players and for correctly predicted the winner of 49 of 50 states in the 2008 election, can save the tattered reputation of math subjects. For students across the country, there’s clearly an engagement deficit in the subject. He has the potential to telegraph an important message to kids: It’s O.K. to be a math nerd. Across the land, kids hate math. As a result, the potential to love and embrace math is being squandered — perhaps even the future of potential Nate Silvers and Nobel Laureates. Kyselyssä selvitin oppilaiden Internet-palvelujen ja sosiaalisen median käyttötapoja, hyödyntämistä oppimisen tukena sekä palvelujen käyttöä koulussa ja vapaa-ajalla. Olen tykännyt kokeilla kaikkea mahdollista opetuksessani, en siksi että löytäisin uusia välineitä, ohjelmia tms. vaan sen takia että ne avaavat uusia “ovia” tapoihin opettaa, tapoihin oppia ja varsinkin opiskelijoille parhaimmillaan ennennäkemättömiä pohdiskelun kohteita. Voisiko nyt puhua matematiikan opettamisen ja matematiikan kokeen “pedagogiikasta”? Koe on oppimistilanne, siitä on hyvä lähteä. Tein suuren muutoksen koeviikolle jo viime jaksossa, jolloin kurssikokeena oli sekä paperikoe että sähköinen koe. Silloin koepäivän pituus vaihteli ryhmässäni 2h-6h.Sama aika oli kokeessa nyt jo toistamiseen.Ennen perinteinen koeaika on ollut 1½h-3h. Opiskelijat ovat varmasti ihmeissään! Perjantaina pitämässäni kokeessa oli seitsemän kysymyksen perinteinen paperikoe. Olin miettinyt kysymykset uudenlaisiksi, perusteena ainoastaan tuntemus, että abitti on luvannut/mainostanut liite-aineistojen näkyvyyden. Kuinka nyt kävikään? YES! Olin todella onnellinen!
Cheap Smartphones Will be Widespread by 2017, Study Says Most smartphones are hefty investments, each leaving buyers a few hundred dollars in the hole. But that may soon change, as a new study says half of all smartphones will cost less than $150 in only a few years. Conducted by Informa Telecoms & Media, the study predicts that the smartphone market will be split into two extremes: low-end devices and high-end devices, retailing for less than $150 and more than $250, respectively. Pricier phones, however, will find their market share shrinking from 85% of total smartphones sold in 2011 to 33% in 2017, the study says. On the other hand, the popularity of cheaper handsets will explode to 52% of total sold in 2017. In the future, smartphones will also get cheaper. How much did you spend on your current smartphone?
