Dog Boarding Just Got Awesome! | DogVacay Tabula Upload a PDF, get back tabular CSV data. Poof! As many developers and data reporters know, dealing with data tables in Adobe Acrobat PDF files is a pain in the rear (to put it lightly). Part of the problem is that PDF is not a data format so much as an electronic paper format. Another part: existing extraction tools, such as xpdf/Poppler’s pdftotext, aren’t designed for data tables and aren’t exactly human-friendly. Jeremy B. At the same time, Knight-Mozilla Fellow Manuel Aristarán was working on the initial stages of a web app he called Tabula, drawing upon document analysis ideas found in academic papers by Tamir Hassan, Burcu Yildiz, et al, and Emerlinda Oro, among others. Today we’re pleased to announce the initial public release of Tabula, a collaboration born out of these previously separate projects. You can play with a restricted live demo here to get an idea of what Tabula can do. How it works (We use this XML intermediate representation for historical reasons. Columns Recognition

OpenPlans | Helping cities work better. Rain Alarm Time banking Time banking is a pattern of reciprocal service exchange that uses units of time as currency. It is an example of a complementary monetary system. A time bank, also known as a service exchange, is a community that practices time banking. The unit of currency, always valued at an hour's worth of any person's labor, used by these groups has various names, but is generally known as a time dollar in the USA and a time credit in the UK. Time banking is primarily used to provide incentives and rewards for work such as mentoring children, caring for the elderly, being neighborly—work usually done on a volunteer basis—which a pure market system devalues. As a philosophy, time banking also known as Time Trade is founded upon five principles, known as Time Banking's Core Values: Everyone is an assetSome work is beyond a monetary priceReciprocity in helpingSocial networks are necessaryA respect for all human beings The time dollar Dr.
DiffNow Peer-to-peer lending Peer-to-peer lending (also known as person-to-person lending, peer-to-peer investing, and social lending; abbreviated frequently as P2P lending) is the practice of lending money to unrelated individuals, or "peers", without going through a traditional financial intermediary such as a bank or other traditional financial institution. This lending takes place online on peer-to-peer lending companies' websites using various different lending platforms and credit checking tools. Overview The interest rates are set by lenders who compete for the lowest rate on the reverse auction model, or are fixed by the intermediary company on the basis of an analysis of the borrower's credit. Borrowers assessed as having a higher risk of default are assigned higher rates. Characteristics The key characteristics of peer-to-peer lending are: Early peer-to-peer lending was also characterized by disintermediation and reliance on social networks but these features have started to disappear.
CSV Fingerprints CSV is a simple and common format for tabular data that uses commas to separate rows and columns. Nearly every spreadsheet and database program lets users import from and export to CSV. But until recently, these programs varied in how they treated special cases, like when the data itself has a comma in it. It's easy to make a mistake when you try to make a CSV file fit a particular format. To make it easier to spot mistakes, I've made a "CSV Fingerprint" viewer (named after the "Fashion Fingerprints" from The New York Times's "Front Row to Fashion Week" interactive ). Colors indicate data types. The CSV file for the fingerprint at the top was pulled from scraping the meta data of California's water reservoirs from the California Department of Water Resources. The above fingerprint was generated from another CSV file of reservoir historical capacities. In the input field below, copy and paste your own CSV files to generate their CSV fingerprint. Update:
Category:Science Science needs to learn to accommodate this qualitative realm, and learn to understand it - not quantitatively, but qualitatively. This requires new methods and ways of thinking for science -- not outside of a (limited) science, but within an expanded one. - Michael Mehaffy This section should cover both scientific concepts about P2P (network theory and such), but also the use of P2P practices within the field of science. Ported so far are three first columns of the Encyclopedia and the Resources section. The three most important aspects of an Open Science model are: 1) Open Access to scientific journals; 2) access to the raw material as Open Data; and 3) access to the transparent Open Process of the research methodologies itself. Or : Transparency in experimental methodology, observation, and collection of data. John Wilbanks insists that: Open Science differs from Open Source Software!!
