Lunar Rethinks Rock Climbing Walls, Making Them Slicker And Smarter Few things say filthy rich more succinctly than an indoor rock-climbing wall. But even those lucky enough to have them, must contend that the hulking structures don’t match their surrounding décor. As Lunar Europe puts it, “Pro gear is out of place. archdaily Danish architects BIG have just shared with us the Cross # Towers, their latest project in Seoul. Architect Rem Koolhaas in The Simpsons In The Simpsons last episode, Rem Koolhaas made a brief appearance where he is shown teaching to a group of students. As Metropolitan Monk noted in Archinect.com, to appear in The Simpsons episode is the most unchallengeable proof that you have achieved Starchitect status. The Scene, described by Archinect.com: “Rem Koolhaas is working – on a cruise ship notabene – as an instructor – probably in iconographic buildings – in KIDZONE ELITE. The ship, just like CCTV, is an emblem of closure. Google – The first Google image for every word in the dictionary If a picture says more than a thousand words – and current internet dynamics tend to agree – what would a visual guide to the English vocabulary, contemporary and ‘webresentative’, look like? Ben West and Felix Heyes, two artists and designers from London (UK), found out when they replaced the 21,000 words found in your everyday dictionary with whatever shows up first for each word in Google’s image search. Behold Google – a 1240 page behemoth of JPGs, GIFs and PNGs in alphabetical order. “We used two PHP scripts my brother Sam wrote for us,” says Ben about the process in an email. “The first one takes a text list of dictionary words and downloads each image in sequence, and the second lays them out into columns and outputs a PDF.”

Current-Powered ‘Reeds’ Illuminate Urban Waterways © Pensa Although you might not want to swim in them, many large cities are centered around one or more major waterways. Whether it's the San Francisco Bay, or the Hudson River, these bodies of water provide a refreshing change from the hustle and smog of the inner city, and many people like to walk, jog, or simply sit beside them. Lessons From The Past: How Living Like Great Grandma Is Green © Matt's backyard circa 1913. Gardens, root cellar, chicken coop, dog house, well, cistern, and outhouse all worked within the patterns of nature. Steve Mouzon has noted that everyone used to be green:

Neri Oxman: On Designing Form Neri Oxman is an architect and founder of MATERIALECOLOGY with the MIT Media Lab. Her work focuses on computational strategies for form finding; she chooses to define and design processes that generate form. She has published numerous papers and has contributed to various texts. Her work has also been featured at the MOMA for the exhibit “Design and the Elastic Mind“, which she designed four systems of processes. In this lecture posted by PopTech, Oxman discusses what the processes of nature can teach designers and how computational strategies defined by materials and the environment can expand the possibilities of the generation of form through algorithms and analysis.
