We were both challenged to find the bona fide botanical name for this taxon, and had to give up (no results in the USPTO database, for one), so we left it as a black-fruited selection (read more below). Taisha writes: The past two days in Vancouver have been quite warm and enjoyably sunny--prompting many to get out into the garden. For those in the temperate northern hemisphere who are anticipating growing plants from seeds soon, I thought I would help explain some oft-used seed terminology. Certified organic (with an emphasis on Canada, as definitions and regulations are different depending on country): Organic seeds are seeds that are harvested from a plant grown in a way that meets organic regulations. Many seeds may be labeled organic, and since 2009 the official Canada Organic Logo has been voluntarily used to mark products that are organic. Hybrid: Hybrid seeds are products of elite plants with specific traits that are cross-pollinated.

Animal of the day - For animal lovers Monday 07 April 2014 The Black Duiker - little diving antelope The Black duiker (Cephalophus niger) is a small antelope that lives in West Africa, primarily in the coastal countries of Guinea through Nigeria. The average black duiker is only 32 inches (81 cm.) long, 18 inches (45 cm.) tall at the shoulder, and weighs 40 pounds (18 kg.). It makes its home in dense, lowland rainforests or shrublands. This habitat is important to the black duiker as it provides protection from predators, namely eagles and leopards. In fact, the black duiker is nicknamed the "diving buck" because of its ability to dive for cover into a dense area. Other physical traits that identify this rarely seen animal include its brown/black color; long, narrow head; short, tassel-like tail; and short (approximately six inches in length), straight horns hidden in a tuft of hair atop its head. The black duiker appears to breed year-long, and, in captivity, they have been known to have an average lifespan of ten years.
