Redefining the 21st century classroom

Redefining the 21st century classroom

Overview Back In 2007⋅⋅⋅ In 2007, supported by five of the most prominent textbook publishers in higher education, CourseSmart started out with the simple goal of providing instructors in college and higher education a better textbook evaluation service. We knew that for instructors, getting textbooks for evaluation was a tedious and time consuming task. They'd contact the publisher directly, then wait days for a book to ship or wait for the publisher sales representative to deliver it in person. And go through the same process again for each book they wanted to review. For publishers, it was just as difficult, spending millions of dollars each year to give away thousands of sample textbooks to faculty across the country, without knowing if an instructor would eventually assign the book for their course. Millions Of Users, Millions In Savings By 2008, students were telling us they wanted a digital option for textbooks too. And we couldn't stop there. More Titles, More Innovation Our Partners

PLATO: The Emergence of Online Community Copyright © 1994 by David R. Woolley An earlier version of this article appeared in the January 1994 issue of Matrix News. Overview Two decades before the World Wide Web came on the scene, the PLATO system pioneered online forums and message boards, email, chat rooms, instant messaging, remote screen sharing, and multiplayer games, leading to the emergence of what was perhaps the world's first online community. The PLATO system was designed for Computer-Based Education. PLATO originated in the early 1960's at the Urbana campus of the University of Illinois. PLATO is a timesharing system. Throughout the 1960's, PLATO remained a small system, supporting only a single classroom of terminals. PLATO Notes: Original Development In the summer of 1973, Paul Tenczar asked me to write a program that would let PLATO users report system bugs online. We already had a way for users to report bugs, but it was just an open text file called "notes". This was simple enough, but there were problems. Anonymity
