The Moment magazine Interview: Richard Saul Wurman Working out of the French country-style mansion he shares with his wife, novelist Gloria Nagy, in Newport, Rhode Island, Wurman has continued to launch new projects and conferences in the same inventive and rebellious spirit as TED. In 2012, he organized his first WWW Conference, which featured improvised conversations between pairs of prominent but unusually matched thinkers with curious minds. Next up will be the 555 Conference, for which he plans to select five cities around the world to host a one-day gathering of five experts sharing five predictions of future patterns in areas such as health, energy, food, urban development and entertainment. Wurman’s other projects for knowledge sharing include the Geeks and Geezers Summit—which invites dialogue across generations, the Urban Observatory—a new way of organizing and presenting live data about cities—and FEDMED, a conference that explores the relationship between federal governments and healthcare.

Sadly, though web searches have become and integral part of the academic research landscape, the art of the Google search is an increasingly lost one. Digital Exclusion Compounds Loneliness for Older People Susan Allen of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation blogged last week about the issue of loneliness for older people. Digital inclusion is relevant here. When people talk about digital inclusion they often stress the financial and economic benefits: saving money on web purchases, improving job prospects and so on. In fact, there are significant social benefits of being online as well. This can include reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation, particularly for older people. A recent Digital Unite study quoted in the Guardian found that 72% of people over 55 reported that being online reduced feelings of loneliness and isolation.

"Langas į ateitį" started a new international project for seniors - TE @tc_europe Langas į ateitį is continuously participating in international projects that encourage the exchange of experiences with partners from other European countries. The new project "Use IT and enjoy" will start in August 2012 and will be implemented with partner organizations from Sweden and Denmark. Only a part of the elderly in the Baltic region use information technologies in their everyday life: only half of the people aged 50-75 and one-third of the elderly of over 75. The project partners started this initiative to highlight the issue of encouraging seniors for digital inclusion. The purpose of the project is to explore methodologies & facilitate the development of motivations for the elderly to take up digital inclusion. Channel Shift - Helping people use public services online Between 14 September 2011 and 30 April 2012, UK online centres worked collaboratively with Sheffield City Council, Jobcentre Plus, Citizens Advice and The Pensions Service on an innovative project in Sheffield to increase awareness of the benefits of using online public services. The project, led by UK online centres, was a unique city-wide project that encouraged, inspired and mentored organisations to embrace a collaborative approach to digital by default service delivery, and to support individuals to use online services. The project aimed to produce a scalable, sustainable, community-based infrastructure to support and drive channel shift, transforming the way in which individuals and communities engage with online government services now and in the future. The project was a huge success, and established partnerships that will far outlast the life of the project. Video:
