Last updated on 2/5/2014 Print this page1 The Technology Enhanced Learning Research group, led by Kevin Burden (Principal Investigator) based in the Faculty of Education, has completed the first national evaluation to investigate the use and impact of tablet technologies (in this case the iPad), across schools and homes in Scotland. The study was based in eight schools and six local authorities across Scotland where iPad devices were being piloted to investigate a range of issues associated with the deployment of personal mobile devices as tools for teaching and learning. This follows the announcement and launch in May 2012 by the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning in Scotland (Mr. Michael Russell) of a series of pilots6 to assess the issues associated with personal ownership of technologies for learning. It is anticipated the current evaluation will contribute to the evidence base which Scotland is looking to develop in this important aspect of education.

iPad and Education – No Longer A Debate! There is no longer a debate! If money was no object would a teacher want their students to have an iPad each? Even if they only used it to research a different perspective. Even if they only used it to add resources to their work. Even if they only used it as an alternative way to demonstrate learning. The research exists to support the device as a tool for learning. ASTD Webcast On New Mobile Learning Research (Watch Recording) ASTD conducted a free webinar on that research report this week. The speakers at the webinar were Kevin Oakes (founder & CEO of i4CP, earlier founder of Click2Learn which was merged with Docent to form SumTotal) and John Polaschek (Sr. Manager, Learning Technology at Qualcomm).

Apple is pushing for iPad use in education, and several schools across the US have taken up the charge.

A Comprehensive Guide to Content Curation Depending on your point of view, content on the internet can be a vast collection of treasures, a cesspool swimming in filth, or a big pile of gold specks mixed in with an even bigger pile of dirt. My guess is that most people lean towards the last one, giving rise to content curation, the process of finding the gold among the dirt, as a very popular online activity. At its most basic, content curation is the process of finding, organizing, and presenting content from the flood of information and media that inundate the web by the second. Similar to museum curators, content curators sift through a seemingly never-ending amount of digital objects to unearth individual items worthy of being showcased for a specific audience.

What do Students Think of Using iPads in Class? Pilot Survey Results It's almost a year since the iPad was first released and we have been using them in a high school pilot program since September. Our intent was to explore different ways that the iPad could be used by students and the hope was that we could also transition to using e-Books instead of paper textbooks during the course of the year. The pilot has been a source of observational and anecdotal information. After four months I felt we should get a more precise evaluation of how students rated their experiences with the iPads. We had them complete a Google forms survey and collated the results of 126 students that responded. It's important to detail the background for the pilot study in order to set the stage for the analysis.

Lakeville test shows iPads boosted education in many classrooms A new report shows that the Lakeville district’s investment in technology is paying off in terms of student learning and motivation. Of the 31 classrooms or programs that completed research on newly issued iPads last year, 23 reported increases in student engagement, 24 reported that student motivation went up and 20 observed gains in student learning, according to the iLearn Resarch report, discussed at Tuesday’s school board meeting. “This is innovation at its best and I’m really excited about that,” said Roz Peterson, board chairwoman.

Education professor Kristin Redington Bennett knows iPads can revolutionize the K-12 classroom – bringing Internet connectivity to every student and ridding desks and worktables of textbooks, notebooks and binders.
