New Facebook Pages: A Guide for Social Media Marketers This post is co-authored by Curtis Hougland and Kristen Vang of Attention. As more and more marketers use Facebook as a key conduit for brands online, it is important to note some of the new changes to their Business Pages. Following last fall’s overall redesign, these pages will now migrate to the same Wall and tabs design that personal profiles have used. You can explore the new format and follow Mashable on Facebook at Mashable's Facebook page. Following is a rundown of what you need to know: What’s Changing In the redesign, Pages will change from a “box-oriented” design to a “Wall and tabs” design; they will closely mirror the current structure of Personal Profiles. 1. 2. 3. 4. New Version of Skype Adds Screen Sharing Skype, the popular VOIP client formerly owned by eBay, just released a new beta version of its Windows client. The new version finally brings screen sharing to the Windows client, something which already became available in the last beta version of the Mac client in January. In addition, Skype now also allows users to import their contacts from Gmail, Windows Live, Hotmail, AOL, LinkedIn, and Yahoo. Thanks to this update, Mac users (who use the latest beta version) can now also finally share their screens with PC users, which wasn't possible until now. Screen Sharing Overall, while it works perfectly well, Skype's screen sharing features are pretty basic and allow users to either share the full screen or select a part of the screen they want to share. The image of the screen is great, as one would expect. More New Features As always, we need to point out that this is beta software and you might still find some bugs in it.

The Problem with Social Media in the Office There is some good news and bad news about workplace social media. The good news, according to Deloitte, is that nearly one-third (30%) of executives said social networking is a part of their business and operations strategy. A smaller, but still significant, number reported leveraging the Web 2.0 tools to build their brand, communicate internally, recruit employees and engage the workforce. However, 55% of executives admitted that their companies do not have an official policy for social networks—and 22% would like to use social nets, but don’t know how. Now for the bad news: There can be some serious downsides to using social networks—which even enthusiastic users admit. Nearly three-quarters of employees agreed that it’s easy to damage a company’s reputation on social media, including 24% who strongly agreed. Still, 53% of employees felt that their online profiles are none of their employers’ business. That can lead to some iffy content and potentially harmful publicity.

Adidas Launches “Your Area” Local Tab on its Adidas Launches “Your Area” Local Tab on its Facebook Profile As Facebook expands its reach globally, international brands should appeal to local audiences with their public profile pages. At least, that’s the thinking of adidas, the German footwear maker, which launched a “Your Area” tab on its Facebook profile. It allows the 1.8 million fans of the adidas Facebook page to view content from their local countries where they buy sneakers and other products. The page will target 13 countries with the Your Area tab, including the U.S, China, and several throughout Europe. A list of the features include: A News Feed with local content, featuring links, events and promotions.A photo and video viewer, featuring adidas products (and the people who use them). The page also helps local stores target their specific fans. Conclusion We applaud adidas’ approach to making its Facebook page more personal and localized. From A Geek’s Geek: Daniel Raffel’s Favorite New Projects, Produ When Daniel Raffel emailed and asked if we’d be interested in publishing his list of favorite stuff from 2009 we quickly agreed. He has worked on some of the more interesting projects in Silicon Valley over the last couple of years, and has his finger on the pulse of new technology. His post is below. As the year winds down, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at my favorite tech launches this year. As I started assembling my list and bouncing them off friends I started to group them into the following categories: New Projects, New Products and Services, Feature Updates, and iPhone Apps. This list is an admittedly subjective batch. New Projects Dive into HTML5 There are so many reasons to be excited about HTML5. Kutcher Threatens To Delete Twitter Account Smell that? That’s the aroma of publicity stunt. It may or may not be wafting from the matrimonial abode of Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, or from executive producer offices of an ill-described reality show. When generating buzz, sometimes people’s own imaginations are more effective than your own, and a little bit of vagueness can go along way. That was from Variety, and it was enough that Moore and Kutcher began tweeting 140 character tales of exploitation and stalking. (As a side note, it is kind of ironic. There was so much ado about the Reveille and Brillstein (“Biggest Loser,” “The Office”) project Twitter cofounder Biz Stone twice took to the Twitter blog to deny that Twitter was making a TV show. What’s amazing about the whole thing is that the original controversy-creating statement really says nothing about the show. Now it’s possible Kutcher and Moore were punk’d, and that’d be pretty sweet, or they might be punking everybody else, which is par for the course.
