Visual literacy is the ability to construct meaning from or communicate meaning through information presented in the form of an image. While it may seem like this could only be applicable to the elementary student, visual literacy pervades all subject areas, disciplines, and grade levels in schools. From identifying patterns, to understanding modern art, to interpreting and creating graphs, visual literacy is one of the most widely important skills students should develop while in K-12 schools. Teaching and practicing visual literacy, as well as making students’ thinking visible to others, has never been easier. Many activities and methodologies exist for incorporating visual literacy and making thinking visible in the classroom, but now mobile apps are able to help support the practices of visual literacy and visible thinking even more. 10 Ways to Use Pinterest in the Classroom
Due to the popularity of my post Pinterest – Turning Procrastination into Classroom Preparation, I’ve decided to follow up with ways to use Pinterest with students. When using Pinterest, keep in mind that not all pins are safe and secure, and monitoring will be necessary to ensure students don’t stumble upon inappropriate content. Nonetheless, Pinterest provides some creative opportunities in the classroom, and could be a great method for instruction, collaboration, and classroom projects. Here are 10 ways to use Pinterest with your students, including some example boards online: CLASSROOM MUSIC BOARD – if you ever play music while students work or write, create a board where students can pin their favorite songs and artists so you can use their favorite music in class (remember to check to make sure their suggestions are language and theme appropriate first!) Reading and Wriitng Notebook FAQ
I just started reading The Cafe Book yesterday by The Sisters and I am already so excited to make some changes in my classroom because of it. You can bet that I will be doing some serious posting about it during the next month as I begin to launch it in my classroom. I got a really great email from Lindsay today and thought I would answer her questions on the blog about my reading and writing notebooks. I thought that some of you might have the same questions yourself. The first question she asked was, "Do your kids have both reading and writing notebooks?" The notebook that I use in my classroom is a combined reading and writing notebook. The second question was, "Are they responsible for bringing the notebooks to class each day or do you house them in your room? I am lucky enough to have the capabilities to store the notebooks in my classroom. I do a mixture of both. As we rebuild our notebooks, I am planning on sharing more details about them with you all.

Children learn social skills by interacting freely with peers. Playgrounds provide an opportunity for children from different classrooms to interact and enhance skill development. For some, the relatively new social network site Pinterest has become a virtual playground allowing users to “pin” inspiring images from around the web. As a new teacher, it’s easy to become overwhelmed trying to create motivating lessons while managing the responsibilities within the classroom. Pinterest, created in 2009 and launched in March of 2010, has been ranked 10th out of the top visited social networking sites across the world, allowing users to search for pins with a specific theme or subject.
