Curvy Cross Processing in Photoshop CS3

This tutorial describes one of my favorite techniques for ‘spicing’ up a photograph. This method is adapted from the color darkroom of old. In those days, innovative photographers often processed film in a chemical solution intended for another type of film. For instance, they might process color slide film in C-41 chemicals. Begin with a processed image that has high contrast. Repeat this process by adding yet another curves adjustment layer, this layer will be used to create the cross processed look. The basic rule of thumb is to raise the red and green in the highlights, and to drop the red and green in the shadows. Drop the blue in the highlights and raise the blue in the shadows. Note as you work through the previous steps that much of the adjusting is based on your own personal preference. At the conclusion of these steps, the result will resemble a twisted helix As a final touch, you may choose to add even a bit more contrast.

Ideas for Teen Rooms with Small Space We have gotten a lot of feedback from readers that they require ideas for rooms that are a bit short on space. Here is a set of space saving furniture for teen rooms from Italian maker Clei. The highlight of these space saving teen room designs are their foldable beds which can be folded to conserve floor space when not in use. The images that follow show lovely arrangements for teen bedrooms with folding beds. The cots, desks, wardrobes and closets in the images provide a perfect system that gives enough storage space without taking away the floor space leaving the bedrooms as spacious as ever. The arrangement is kept simple by limiting the shelves, cabinets, closets as well as the desk and the cot to just one wall.

Virtual Letterman Jacket Step 1 Open a new file 700 x 300 at 72dpi. The final file will be cropped to 600×200 after the first step, but because the displace filter causes distortion at the edges that would otherwise be visible and unwanted I’ve enlarged the original canvas to accomodate for cropping the excess. The first step is to create a little texture in the jacket fabric. Step 2 Create a new layer above the fabric called Grey and fill it with 50% grey (Edit>Fill and select contents to be 50% grey). Add a new layer above the Grey layer called Displacement Map. Paint on the canvas with black and white as seen below. Step 3 Obviously these lines are much too vivid to create a smooth transition between the folds in our fabric, so I’m going to apply a Gaussian Blur (Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur) of 40 to really even out the tones. Merge this layer with the Grey layer below by pressing Command+E (CTRL+E on PC) and re-name the merged layer Displacement Map. Step 4 At this point we will apply our first displace filter.

We were working at a large advertising agency that was known for stunning design work. The art directors wielded a level of power at the agency that I have never seen anywhere else, and the result over the decades was a portfolio of gorgeous print and TV ads. Things went well for a while, until I attended a kickoff meeting for a new website project. What followed was a long, drawn-out battle for control of the site between me and the designer. Me: And when you click on this button where does it take you? At the time, I thought I had encountered a particularly obstinate designer, but in fact I had just bulldozed my way into the biggest challenge in information architecture (IA): navigating the line between beautiful design and usable IA. 1. We don’t always have the luxury of selecting the designer who will bring our wireframes and prototypes to life, but on occasion this happens.
