The following is from the November issue of the Edudemic Magazine for iPad. Click here to view the app in iTunes. My daily PLN reading seems to be full of stories about how to use iPads in the classroom. While this is certainly important information, I believe our Twitter feeds could use a few more stories about the positive impact the introduction of iPads are having in schools. While the decision to share these positive results is a direct result of the positive impact on student learning, it is also important to realize the impact this initiative is having with teachers. I’ve never observed anything else that has had the impact on teacher personal learning like the introduction of the iPad. A Change In Teaching Style Our focus over this three year period has been to define what it means to teach in a way that allows students to learn differently as a result of this incredible influx of technology. iOrganized: How a teacher can use the iPad to stay organized? I bought my iPad about eighteen months ago. I have said it before, and will say it again: it has changed my life! As an eLearning leader, one of the most common complaints I receive from staff is that “it is really hard to stay organized with the iPad! Everything is all over the place!” 1- Curriculum-design (unit-planning): I use Pages to help me stay on top of curriculum design. 2- Lesson-planning: I use Evernote to plan my lessons. 3- Documentation: I use Evernote to document evidence from my lessons. 4- Reflection: I add a very short reflection to my Evernote lesson-planning after every lesson. 5- Attendance and Assessment records: I use Numbers to keep my attendance and assessment records. 6- File-sharing and printing: many teachers initially complained that the iPad does not have a USB port. 7- Marking and grading: when the students send me work, I often ask to receive it as a PDF (most apps allow exporting as PDFs). 3 Reasons Students Should Not Raise Their Hands A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to know that how I questioned kids in the class was not particularly effective. I always seemed to notice ‘the evident’ kid – you know the one. Big personality, or quick to answer, or fearless even if they didn’t really know. That kid. But what about the others? I was lucky enough to read a few books, talk to a few teachers and try out several things to change my ways. Pair then Share – As a student you will always get to practice or test out your response with your partner first. Anyone could be asked – Your name is written down on a popsicle stick in a bag on my desk. Answers not Avoidance – When I call on you its with the idea that you will be answering. The art of questioning is, for me, a journey and I am nowhere near the end!

5 Questions To Ask Before Using Tablets In School Tablets are not for everyone. Most people are perfectly capable of making it through the day checking email, reading, and watching videos on their smartphone until they can make it home to their laptop. That being said, tablets were sent from on high for student life. They’re cheaper and easier to transport than laptops, yet they’re more substantial and full-featured than smartphones. Schools and colleges all over the country have taken note of tablets’ potential for enhancing the educational experience and many have begun to provide them for students. If your school has stiffed you but you still want a tablet, here’s a snapshot courtesy of our content partners at Online Degrees of what the market looks like right now for academic users. How Much Does Price Matter? High school and younger students may have a bit more (of their parents’) money to work with when it comes to buying a tablet, but we’re assuming price is the top consideration for you cash-strapped college kids.
