Digital Cameras & Video: A Beginner's Guide Lights, camera, action! Over the last few years the line between the once totally separate worlds of video and stills photography has been getting gradually more blurred. This is hardly surprising: in the digital era the camcorder and stills camera share so much basic technology that they are, to all intents and purposes, the same thing. The growth in video sharing (on places like YouTube) has ensured movie capture has long been a standard feature even on the cheapest compact camera. The HDSLRs are here! Compact digital cameras have been able to capture short video clips for many years. The concept of a single camera that does it all is certainly appealing. Although some professional DSLR cameras are able to shoot stills at up to 10 fps, this rate is nowhere near fast enough for movies and produces jerky video. Camcorder replacement? Year In Review: The 11 Best Short Films of 2011 Over the course of the year, curating the Short Film of the Day feature has given me a deep and affecting appreciation of the art form. Before, I hadn’t given much thought to the little bastards, but the truth is that they are incredibly versatile and representative of the boundaries that film can break. They can be jokes told well or human dramas driven home. They can be a perfect bite or demand to be expanded into a full meal. They are so much more than movies with short runtimes. There’s one difficulty in judging them, though. The other (small) problem is that sometimes short films spend a long time touring festivals and otherwise being unavailable online. 11. Leave it to a short film featuring a marketing mascot changed into a brain-hungry monster to teach all a little bit about humanity. 9. 8. 7. 6.

These Photos Are Actually Pencil Perfect Drawings At just 22 years old, Italian artist Diego Fazo has developed the skill to create photo-realistic drawings using a simple charcoal pencil. His latest creation, pictured below, has drawn hundreds of positive comments on his Deviant Art profile. Don’t tell me you can tell the image below is a drawing and not a high-definition photograph, because I don’t buy it. In fact people were so skeptical this incredible piece of art was drawn by hand that young Diego Fazo had to put up some photos of the work in progress just to lay doubts to rest. Like other talented artists who started their careers on Deviant Art, Diego is a self-taught pencil master whose technique matured with the passing of the years. How to Screen Print!Silkscreening at Home. Wayyyy back around Christmas I took some time off to partake in my latest adventure. Relaxing. As many of you may remember, relaxing consisted of knitting a sweater, perfecting homemade pizzas, reading and … teaching myself to screen print these tea towels. I also spent a little time looking up the *exact* definition of relaxing. At the time, I promised I would, when the time was right, teach you how to screen print at home. That time is now. If you’re anything like me, and I know you are, you thought screen printing (otherwise known as silkscreening even though they’re kindda different) was really hard. When I first started this little nod to the 60′s adventure, I was going to get all set up professional style. Then I didn’t. So I figured out a way to screen print (silkscreen) that pretty much anyone can do with mostly stuff from around your house. Just kidding. So let me explain the type of screen printing I’ll be showing you. Understand? You’ll also need a frame with “silk” on it. 1.
