The organizers focus on the key elements of comic strips by allowing students to choose backgrounds, characters, and props, as well as to compose related dialogue (shown at left). This versatile tool can be used by students from kindergarten through high school, for purposes ranging from learning to write dialogue to an in-depth study of a formerly neglected genre. The tool is easy to use, made even easier with the Comic Strip Planning Sheet, a printable PDF that comic creators can use to draft and revise their work before creating and printing their final comics. Grades K – 3 | Lesson Plan | Standard Lesson Word Study with Henry and Mudge Henry and Mudge is used in this lesson to build students' word recognition through rereading, high-frequency word banks, word studies, and writing.

Books That Heal Kids Puzzle Me Words Puzzle Me Words is a fun, educational game designed for kindergarten and first-grade students. The game reinforces letter sounds by having students combine letters to form words for the pictures they see (e.g., pig and hat). Scootie, a talking school bus, reads the words aloud, further reinforcing the letter sounds. As students complete each round, they earn a new puzzle piece toward their prize puzzle: a coloring sheet that they can print, color, and display proudly at home or in school. Two levels are offered in the game: Beginner—This level limits the choices to eight letters and requires three correct words per round; three rounds are needed to win the prize puzzle.Advanced—This level is more challenging because all twenty-six letters of the alphabet are presented as letter choices and more words are needed to finish each round before winning the prize puzzle. Built-in save capability allows students to exit but return to their game before they have earned their final prize puzzle.

An Original Writer's Notebook Lesson from Corbett For this lesson's notebook page, after we explore Pat Benatar's metaphor in her song "Love is Battlefield," my students create original and interesting metaphors for the topic of love in their writer's notebooks; on a notebook page, each metaphor is established and extended upon with two details. Once students have practiced extending original love metaphors, they are asked to create new metaphors over the month that are more appropriate to their other core content areas: math, science, and social studies. Once a week in Language Arts class, students polish a new metaphor they have created outside of English class, then publish and illustrate it on a designated page in their writer's notebook. After the two-page notebook spread is complete, students can be reminded/prompted to use more metaphors during writing or during processing in the future. In 2012, I added a poetry extension lesson, which you can find below in the write-up. Idea #1...Teaching a Four-Metaphor Poem From day
