The Glory of Big Data Late in the first day of this year's TED Conference, its understated curator, Chris Anderson, took the stage and made a pronouncement. "The computing power in some of the things that we're seeing is really startling," he said. "It feels to me as if things have suddenly notched up a level in an unexpected way. Back when it was just an exclusive conference for geek geniuses and venture capitalists, TED stood for Technology, Entertainment, Design. In 2011 the volume of available data is predicted to continue along its exponential growth curve to 1.8 zettabytes. But it wasn't until the next morning that we truly understood what Chris had been getting at. Roy has also shown that the methods he developed to store and analyze one child's speech lessons can be applied more broadly, and he has begun doing so. The amount of data available to us is increasingly vast.

FMPs vs FDs - FMPs vs FDs 30 Nov, 2010 Most one-year FDs offer a return of around 6.5-7% to ordinary depositors and 7.5% to senior citizens (people over 60). Says Shanbhag, "What gives FMPs the edge is the greater tax efficiency they offer. However, the return on an FMP is categorised as a capital gain. This gain taxed at the rate of 10% would mean a tax payment of Rs 400 and a net gain of Rs 3,600 which would imply a return of 7.2%. Now compare this to 4.84% return you earn in case of a fixed deposit, it tells you very clearly where more money is to be made. "PREDRIVE: After Technology" (currently on exhibition at The Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, PA November 14-April 2, 2009) features new works by six international artists including Takeshi Murata, Paper Rad, Gretchen Skogerson, Antoine Catala, and Brody Condon. The exhibition was conceived with a very specific group of artists in mind -- artists who placed both the dysfunction and arrogance of ever-changing technologies at the center of their work. Below, I speak with two of the featured artists in the show, Takeshi Murata and Jacob Ciocci (of Paper Rad) -- we cover everything from readymade software aesthetics to the dream of the perfect collector -- someone willing to take the risk of simply buying an idea. -- Melissa Ragona Melissa Ragona: Last night I was asking about how you each manipulate your work at the level of the pixel. Takeshi Murata: Yeah, but for me it has more to do with working within a different historical context.

Physicists Achieve Quantum Teleportation Across a Distance of 10 Miles How far can you beam information instantaneously? Try 10 miles, according to a study in Nature Photonics that pushes the limits of quantum teleportation to its greatest distance yet. At that distance, the scientists say, one can begin to consider the possibility of someday using quantum teleportation to communicate between the ground and a satellite in orbit. As stories about quantum teleportation usually note, this isn’t the Starship Enterprise’s transporter: The weird quantum phenomenon makes it possible to send information, not matter, across a distance. It works by entangling two objects, like photons or ions. Previous experiments achieved this phenomenon in photons separated by a distance of hundreds of yards, connected by fiber channels. In this particular experiment, researchers maximally entangled two photons using both spatial and polarization modes and sent the one with higher energy through a ten-mile-long free space channel.
