Yonaguni Island Diving - Open Coast
Yonaguni boasts world-class drift diving conditions that attract schooling hammerheads and giant dogtooth tunas. Colorful hard and soft corals burst from reef walls and drop-offs provide bountiful feeding spots for local residents such as emporer angelfish, blue anthis, whole colonies of clown fish and numerous parrot fish and butterfly fish. With the island surrounded by dynamic coral encrusted arches each dive ensures a rollercoaster of a ride through crystal clear caves and caverns. In 1986 Kihachiro Aratake, a local diver, was out looking for new dive sites when he discovered a set of underwater ruins that is now rumored to be the sister city to Atlantis. The entry area to the site is at 33 feet (10 meters) and is dominated by huge megaliths adorned with carvings. The main monument is over 160 ft. (48 m) long and 60 ft. (18 m) high, an impressive series of stone steps and terraces resembling the Mayan ruins of South America.
