This online activity is designed for beginning and struggling readers to help them recognize word patterns and learn about onset and rime. Students are first asked to select a vowel, and are then presented with a series of words to sort into short-vowel word families. Students can then print their completed word family chart and use it to practice reading the words fluently. This activity is modeled after the word family sort referenced in Small Group Reading Instruction: A Differentiated Teaching Model for Beginning and Struggling Readers by Beverly Tyner (International Reading Association, 2004). Here are some examples:A list of common verbs (be, go, do, have, etc.)A list of weather adjectives (rainy, sunny, stormy, etc.)A list of family nouns (mother, father, sister, brother, uncle, etc.) Now, how do you study these word lists? There are a few things you can do. 1. Just reading the word or memorizing it is not enough, at least not in most cases. For example, let's say you are learning the word "resign" (which means "to leave your job"). "I am sorry, but I must resign."" 2. Take the list of words and write a short story with all of them. Let's say you are studying some verbs beginning with the letter E: earn, eat, end, enjoy and estimate. You can write a short story such as this: "Andy was eating dinner and enjoying a quiet evening, when he started thinking about his future. 3. 4. Make a dictation. 5. What are good friends for?

British Life and Culture in the UK - Woodlands Junior SchoolPuzzle Me WordsPuzzle Me Words is a fun, educational game designed for kindergarten and first-grade students. The game reinforces letter sounds by having students combine letters to form words for the pictures they see (e.g., pig and hat). Scootie, a talking school bus, reads the words aloud, further reinforcing the letter sounds. Two levels are offered in the game: Beginner—This level limits the choices to eight letters and requires three correct words per round; three rounds are needed to win the prize puzzle.Advanced—This level is more challenging because all twenty-six letters of the alphabet are presented as letter choices and more words are needed to finish each round before winning the prize puzzle. Built-in save capability allows students to exit but return to their game before they have earned their final prize puzzle. To continue a game already in progress, simply click the Open tab and enter the save code provided. Grades K – 2 | Lesson Plan | Standard Lesson Gingerbread Phonics ABC Match
