An Explanation of 2nd Curtain Sync Flash (or Slow Sync Flash) A Post By: Jeffrey Kontur Let’s look at the sequence of events when combining flash with long exposures. When the flash fires during exposure, the normal sequence looks something like this (note there may be some slight variation among different camera brands or flash modes): Press shutter button.Curtain A opens.Flash fires.Frame is open for some period of time (as determined by your shutter speed).Curtain B closes the frame, ending the exposure. This is the normal sequence and doesn’t really have a name, except to help differentiate it from our next scenario. Press shutter button.Pre-flash fires so the camera can measure and adjust the intensity.Curtain A opens.Frame is open for some period of time (as determined by your shutter speed).Flash fires.Curtain B closes the frame and ends the exposure. To understand the significance, imagine you are taking a picture at night in which moving lights will be visible during the exposure. PS: Check out these Amazing Examples of Slow Sync Flash

PhotoShelter™ - Archive, Buy, Sell Photographs Lighting 101 (Photo by Strobist reader Sam Simon) Welcome to Lighting 101. You may not realize it yet, but you have just stepped through a door that may change your photography forever. Over the past few years, over four million people from nearly every country in the world have begun their lighting education right here. Photography is literally writing with light. You'll learn how to take the removable flash that you probably already have on the top of your camera and use it off-camera to make beautiful, more three-dimensional photos. The Good News: The Gear Doesn't Cost Much Basic lighting gear is also refreshingly inexpensive. You can even make a lot of light modifiers yourself for next to nothing. For the most part, it's the location of the light that is most important. Click on a reader's picture to learn a little more about how it was made. (Photo by Strobist reader Ken Brown) The difference between their photos and yours is that they already know how to use their flash off camera.

Using a Lightmeter and “Placing” the Photographic Exposure | ESSENTIALS For Photographers Meters. Some people hate ‘em. Some people love ‘em. But a lot of people don’t know what they do or why they should have one. Well the gloves come off on this one. At Lighting Essentials, we LOVE light meters… they give us control that no chimpin’ can… and we can use the knowledge they give us to tame even the most difficult lighting challenge. We will have a lot to say about meters in this post, so grab a cold one (or for my Toronto, Detroit, Boise and Pittsburgh friends… a warm one) and get ready. I received a note from one of the workshop folks from earlier in the year. OK… that really made my day… hell, it made a lot of my days. Be sure to catch the “Going Pro” section for more information on making that jump. Anyway… let’s hit the road with this meter thing. Meters have been the subject of many discussions pro and con recently. I like using a meter. But I push the button and it tells me the exposure. How to Banish Your Ex from Your Digital Life My breakup early this year was the first time it was with someone I was really digitally connected to- Facebook (wherein she linked to several of my friends as well), multiple email accounts, phones, and Linked-In. After the breakup, she just kept emailing me stuff, for months! I made a filter and sent it all to a folder. Once in a while, I scanned the messages there just to be sure there wasn't some horrible threat to worry about (STD {highly unlikely}, murder {also highly unlikely}, suicide {equally unlikely}) just to know that at least the nut was relatively safe herself and not a threat to me and mine. Then she emailed my mother. Then I heard from a few friends that my ex was 'secretly following' me on my Gawker stuff. Then along came Google+. The texting and calls stopped almost right away, so that was never a concern. That left Linked In. The pisser was when she had some unpleasant exchanges with the friends of mine she linked to on Facebook.

Flash Many digital cameras have a built-in flash that is so convenient and easy to use that you are usually unaware it even fires. With your camera on automatic, it's always ready when your autoexposure system decides it's needed. But this on-camera flash lighting has certain characteristics that can make a difference in the way your pictures look. For example, the pictures will have a "flat" lighting typical of flash-on-camera shooting. Alternative approaches, such as using an external flash to bounce light off walls or ceilings, or even just turning the flash off may produce more interesting results. Flash Power and Range One thing to check is a flash's maximum range. The light from a flash falls off with distance. When subjects in an image are located at different distances from the camera, the exposure will only be correct for those at one distance—normally those closest to the camera or in the area metered by the autoexposure system. Alleged Posh Pimp Wants Seized Items Back LAS VEGAS -- A suspected pimp arrested while living in a multi-million dollar mansion tells the court he wants his stuff back. According to court records, Las Vegas police seized a diamond necklace, valued at $140,000 and a man's watch worth $8,000 during a search of Micah Duncan's home last March. Duncan's attorney argues the property should be returned because it is not related to the criminal investigation. A judge agreed earlier this month and now Metro is fighting that decision. In March, Metro's SWAT and Vice Details, along with investigators from the Internal Revenue Service, raided Duncan's $35,000 a month rental home in Lake Las Vegas. According to the arrest report, police believe Duncan is a pimp. In addition to the jewelry currently in dispute, officers seized ammunition, a bullet-proof vest and $20,000 in cash. "Pimps and people who pander women are able to hide a lot of things. In the meantime, Duncan remains on house arrest in an unrelated federal case.
