Phenomenal success for new film that criticises China's environmental policy It has been compared to Silent Spring, Rachel Carson’s seminal work that shaped US environmental policy. Chai Jing, a former Chinese state television reporter, has produced a widely seen video documentary weaving her personal concerns for her daughter with a damning indictment of China’s toothless environmental policy. Since its release online on Saturday, Under the Dome has notched up some 100m views on major Chinese video portals such as Tencent and Youku. It has also prompted 280 million posts on Sina Weibo, a microblogging site. Writing in Global Voices, Owen Guo said that in the documentary a softly spoken Chai addressed a live audience in a style similar to a TED talk, mixing in animations and footage of smoke-belching factories and thick lines of traffic in China’s major cities.
Eric Zuesse – Obama v. Putin: Their Debate on Crimea (I) - Strategic Culture Foundation - on-line journal > Obama v. Putin: Their Debate on Crimea (I) The Source of the ‘New Cold War’: The Basic Disagreement Between Obama and Putin The basic disagreement between U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the source of the economic sanctions against Russia, and ’the new cold war,’ concerns the question of whether the process by which Crimea separated from Ukraine and joined Russia was, as Obama says, «aggression» by Russia, an illegal «seizure» of Crimea by Russia; or, on the other hand, as Putin says, a thoroughly legal and democratic act by the people of Crimea, to exercise their right of self-determination, via a referendum. Many of the points that will be referred-to, along the way here, are going to be opposite to the views that are widespread in the West; and, so, wherever that is the case, clicking onto the linked source will enable you easily to check what’s being said, if it conflicts with what you ‘know’ or have previously been told. The Moral Imperative Of Activism Today’s crises – endless war, environmental catastrophe, desperate poverty and more – can seem so daunting that they paralyze action rather than inspire activism. But the imperative to do something in the face of injustice defines one’s moral place in the universe, as ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern explains. That America is in deep moral and legal trouble was pretty much obvious to everyone before Edward Snowden released official documents showing the extent to which the U.S. government has been playing fast and loose with the Fourth Amendment rights of Americans to be protected against unreasonable searches and seizures.

State Sponsors of Terrorism: US Planned and Carried out 9/11 Attacks, but Blames Other Countries for Them Out MEMRI - Middle East Media Research Institute On the eve of President Obama’s April 2016 visit to Saudi Arabia, the U.S. Congress began debating the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), that would, inter alia, allow the families of victims of the September 11 attacks to sue the Saudi government for damages. Also in April 2016, the New York Times published that a 2002 congressional inquiry into the 9/11 attacks had found that Saudi officials living in the United States at the time had a hand in the plot. The commission’s conclusions, said the paper, were specified in a report that has not been released publicly.

Peaceful protest is much more effective than violence for toppling dictators Political scientist Erica Chenoweth used to believe, as many do, that violence is the most reliable way to get rid of a dictator. History is filled, after all, with coups, rebellions and civil wars. She didn't take public protests or other forms of peaceful resistance very seriously; how could they possible upend a powerful, authoritarian regime? Then, as Chenoweth recounts in a Ted Talk posted online Monday, she put together some data and was surprised by what she found. "I collected data on all major nonviolent and violent campaigns for the overthrow of a government or a territorial liberation since 1900," she says -- hundreds of cases. "The data blew me away."
Swallowed By A Sink Hole In February of 2013 the earth opened up and killed a man in Florida, swallowing him whole as his entire bedroom collapsed from beneath him as he slept. Jeff Bush was sadly never seen again and his body was never recovered. In this BBC Horizon film Professor Iain Stewart makes his way to the house were this disaster occurred in an attempt to understand what exactly happened there. Jeff Bush was asleep when a sinkhole opened up beneath his bedroom. Despite the efforts of his brother to rescue him, Jeff was never seen again and his body was never recovered. Professor Iain Stewart travels to Florida to try and understand what killed Jeff, and why the geology of this state makes it the sinkhole capital of the world. His wife, Yeganeh Salehi, a reporter for UAE English-language newspaper The National, was also detained and released in October. Word came last month that Rezaian will go on trial for espionage charges.
