The Index of Learning Styles is an on-line survey instrument used to assess preferences on four dimensions (active/reflective, sensing/intuitive, visual/verbal, and sequential/global) of a learning style model formulated by Richard M. NNAT The Naglieri Non-Verbal Ability Test® (NNAT®, NNAT2®) is frequently used as a screening test for gifted program entry. The NNAT® is also used in conjunction with standardized achievement testing to see whether or not children are working up to their potential. The NNAT® is a short (about 30 minutes actual test time), multiple choice test, with no reading. As the test name suggests all questions are presented non-verbally - pictures and figures are used rather than words. The NNAT® is sometimes referred to as a matrix reasoning test because of the format in which the questions are presented. The developer of the test, Pearson Assessment Services Inc, markets it as a culture fair test which is not language dependent. There are seven different levels of the NNAT® for administration from Kindergarten to Gr 12. In the law enforcement profession, this concept impacts the relationship between the field training officer (FTO) and the trainee. To ensure effective instruction, FTOs should tailor their training to meet the learning style of recruits. (1) In 2002, the chief of the South San Francisco, California, Police Department (SSFPD) recognized that his agency's FTO program had an almost 50 percent failure rate, a serious concern because of the difficulty finding qualified recruits and the time and expense of the hiring process. When I say that myths and misunderstandings about giftedness abound in our school systems, I know this fact first-hand–there are schools, administrators and teachers who really don’t understand giftedness. In the past, through many, many conversations, online and in person, with parents of gifted kids, I kept hearing a catch phrase used over and over by these parents when talking about their child’s experience with their regular classroom teacher. I would like to believe that my youngest gifted son’s unfortunate experiences during his last year in public school were terrible, isolated examples of what can happen when schools don’t get gifted. What is the solution to making sure all teachers get gifted?
