12 Tastes of Christmas

12 Tastes of Christmas
Are you drooling yet? ‘Cause I have been, ever since I laid eyes on these Gingersnap Milkshakes that Lisa sent over for her installment in our 12 Tastes of Christmas series. Lisa is not only an amazing cook, food stylist and photographer…I’m lucky to get to call this incredible girl a friend. We bonded at Alt Summit last year, and I got to hang with her during my San Fran trip earlier this month. I love this time of year when we gather at holiday festivities, share family recipes, toast the New Year and celebrate being together. When entertaining during the holidays, I like to change up the dessert course by serving these mini gingersnap cookie milkshakes. Serve in little glasses with a cookie crumb-coated rim, drop in a colorful straw and you’ve got yourself a festive treat. These can be altered to accommodate allergies (will be sharing ideas on my site later in the week!) Happy Holidays! Make your own sports drinks – cheap and tasty DIY solutions | SportCrazy.net I remember reading about a DIY sports drink a couple of years back and it caught my interest because I was going through a lot of powdered Gatorade which is next to impossible to find in Ireland, or spending too much money on Lucozade Sport or equivalent sports energy drinks. Athletes drink a lot in training and I wanted to make my own sports drinks to save money and also because I can tailor the ingredients better to my needs. The important ingredients of a sports drink are: water keep the body hydrated, salts to both aid in that hydration (salt makes the solution isotonic) and to replace some (but not all) of the lost salts from sweat, andcarbohydrates (sugars) for energy. It’s pretty easy to figure out a simple recipe if you want to make your own sports drink. 70% water30% orange juicesmall amount of sugar to your energy and taste needspinch of salt (sodium is good, great if you can get some with potassium also) That’s it. 1. Apple Pies I know, I’ve made a few pies lately. But see how these are different? Look at how adorable these are! I mean, come on. Could you resist? I sure couldn’t. We ate them before I had a chance to think about pictures. Oops. This is why I had leftover dough for that impromptu dinner. Although this recipe is a little time consuming, it’s no harder than making any sort of real pie. It still involves slicing fruit. Rolling out crust and making it look pretty. Mixing fruit and sugar and cornstarch. And taking bites with your eyes closed so you can focus solely on each flavor. Please give these a try. Apple Pies Inspired by Pinterest 1 prepared pie dough, rolled out and sliced into strips 6-8 large apples (really any kind of apple will do) 1/3 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling onto the crust 1/3 cup brown sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 1/4 or 1/2 tsp cardamom, if desired 1 tsp cornstarch Juice of a lemon or lime, mixed with 1 cup of water 1 tbsp melted butter Preheat the oven to 375F. Watermelon, Meet Lemonade - Blog - food52 - food community, recipe search and cookbook contests - Merrill Last weekend, my sister and some friends threw me a lovely bridal shower. The food was delicious. Watermelonade Adapted from Go Catering Serves 10 ½ cup sugar4 cups cubed watermelon 3½ cups water ½ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 1. 2. 3. 4. How to Make Marshmallow Fondant This time I decided to make it with those mini fruit flavored marshmallows. I had to sort them by colour first. I figured they would add a little bit of flavor to the fondant so I wouldn't have to add much flavoring oil. I use gel colours to dye my fondant but regular food colouring will work too. I also had lemon oil and coconut flavoring on hand.. oh la la the value brand (which still works fine). Step One: Take a couple of handfuls of marshmallows and put them in a microwave safe bowl. I like to make smaller batches because its easier to add the colour to the melted marshmallow than it is to work the colour into the fondant later. Step Two: Stick the marshmallows in the microwave for ten seconds at a time until the are puffed up and easily stir into a goo with a wooden spoon. Step Three: Add food colouring to the melted marshmallows until you get the colour you want. Step Four: Start folding icing sugar into the marshmallow goo until it becomes a soft and fluffy dough. Finished fondant! 1.

Not so much a recipe… More of a “why have I not been doing this for years?” post. Remember back when I made caramel sauce? For some strange reason, I haven’t made it since then. I know, right!? The other day, I decided to make caramel sauce. I’d also been pouring the leftover coffee into an ice tray and freezing it in the off hand chance I’d have time to make iced coffee. See where I’m going? I didn’t have time to cold brew, so I made coffee in the french press, poured it into a pitcher, and let it rest in an ice bath. Once it was chilled, I took the caramel sauce and drizzled it in some glasses. Totally fancy, I know. Then I added the coffee cubes, my favorite creamer, then the coffee. Lovely. For this batch, I didn’t let the coffee cool enough, so the caramel drizzles disappeared when I poured the coffee in. So, now that I have the power of delicious iced coffee, you’ll find me out in my back yard, chillin’ with a book and sippin’ on love. Pioneer Woman’s Caramel Sauce Like this: Like Loading...

Deep Dish Fruit Pizza My sister-in-law Missy first introduced me to the concept of fruit pizza years and years ago, and here’s how: she brought one to my house and I proceeded to eat the whole thing. But it was small. And I was nursing. My mammary glands made me do it. I whipped up a whopper of a fruit pizza a couple of weeks ago using my good ol’ standby sugar cookie recipe…and it was so darn good in such a naughty, naughty way. This is one of those fun, throw-together treats that’s perfect for everything from a slumber party to a baby shower. Sorry I said mammary glands. The Cast of Characters: my sugar cookie dough (recipe below), marshmallow creme, cream cheese, peaches, kiwi, blueberries…and whatever other fruit you’d like! Now, you could divide the dough in half, then roll out each half into thin, round pizzas. Or you could do what I done did… And press the whole quantity of dough into a sheet pan. I love this pebbly texture. Then just throw it in the oven… Then just let the crust cool completely. So I deet.

Homemade Coffee Creamer My friends tell me the one thing they can’t give up is their flavored coffee creamer. I can understand. Creamy, sweet, smooth, with all sorts of different flavors to choose from. The problem is the ingredients. So if you’re hooked on store-bought creamer then today’s your day. Next time you have friends over for a gathering, make a few batches of homemade coffee creamer, put them in cute bottles and have a coffee bar. A great alternative to regular coffee is herbal coffee. *Since posting these recipes in September 2010, I have developed a few new recipes: Caramel Coffee Creamer and Honey Vanilla Coffee Creamer, Sugar Free and Dairy Free Coffee Creamer **Teeccino contains barley, so if you need to avoid gluten an organic decaf would be a better option. Homemade Cinnamon Strudel Coffee Creamer I prefer to strain each of the creamers through a fine mesh sieve to prevent any spices floating in my coffee. Chocolate Chip Lava Cookies I am so in love with these darn chocolate lava cookies! What is it about a warm, gooey chocolate chip cookie stuffed with decadent, rich, melted chocolate that makes it so irresistible?? Especially when topped with vanilla ice cream. These are one of Kev’s favorite homemade treats, and he usually asks me to make them at least once a week. They are so simple to whip up, and such a treat! All you really need for these fabulous cookies is your favorite cookie dough and a bag of chocolate chips. Since these cookies are absolutely gushing with delicious rich chocolate, my favorite chocolate chips for this recipe are the Hersey’s Milk Chocolate chips. Now let’s make some chocolate lava cookies! Place the flattened cookie dough in the bottom of a well-greased standard sized muffin tin. Now for our gooey, rich milk chocolate filling. Lay the Ziploc bag flat in the microwave, spreading out the chocolate chips in a single layer. Cut a small tip off the Ziploc bag and layer over the cookies. 1.

Stacy Stowers There’s a very good reason why it’s called the Happy Shake! Though this creamy blend tastes like a delicious dessert, it’s chock-full of spinach, berries and super happy foods, like raw chocolate and maca. The Happy Shake is a meal replacement. Before you get started, keep in mind the Happy Shake is more about technique than anything else. ingredients: 1/2 cup water 3-4 cups spinach 1 Tbs. coconut oil 1 Tbs. raw maca powder 2 Tbs. raw cacao powder 1 cup FROZEN blueberries 3/4 cup FROZEN cherries 1/4 cup FROZEN banana Optional: a little raw honey for those who like extra sweetness Optional: 3 ice cubes or a small handful of ice for those hot humid days In your Vitamix or blender start with: 1. 2. 3. If you are using a raw egg, you will need to adjust the amount of water, meaning less water. I have to say, in my experience, I have never met a bad egg. 4 . 5. 6. The best blender is a high speed blender like the Vitamix. For a soft serve ice cream consistency, the blending time is short. 7.

Mocha Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe These mocha chocolate chip cookies make a great addition to your cookie recipe collection. My son’s favorite cookies of all time are these chocolate chip oatmeal cookies that I’ve talked about before. As soon as the cookie jar is emptied from one batch, he’s immediately asking if we can make more. I have to agree with him, they are some of the best cookies I’ve ever tasted. Well, the other day I wanted to make them, but with a little twist. I was craving chocolate. I was craving a big mocha from Starbucks. Since there isn’t a Starbucks close by that I could just hop in the car and visit lickity split to end that craving, I decided I’d make Little Buddy’s cookies with a few additional ingredients to feed my craving, too. I’ll admit, I was nervous that he wouldn’t like them. But in the name of adventure, in the name of expanding his cookie-tasting horizons, and in the name of feeding Mama’s chocolate cravings – I made them. And he loves them. Here’s how I make them. Serves: 12 Cookies Ingredients
