Tree of Life Web Project

Tree of Life Web Project
The Tree of Life Web Project (ToL) is a collaborative effort of biologists and nature enthusiasts from around the world. On more than 10,000 World Wide Web pages, the project provides information about biodiversity, the characteristics of different groups of organisms, and their evolutionary history (phylogeny). Each page contains information about a particular group, e.g., salamanders, segmented worms, phlox flowers, tyrannosaurs, euglenids, Heliconius butterflies, club fungi, or the vampire squid. ToL pages are linked one to another hierarchically, in the form of the evolutionary tree of life. Starting with the root of all Life on Earth and moving out along diverging branches to individual species, the structure of the ToL project thus illustrates the genetic connections between all living things.

Creative Routines “We all have the same 24 hours that Beyoncé has” and its various iterations took the web by storm in late 2013 as the megastar became the figurehead of not only having it all, but being able to somehow do it all too. How do creatives – composers, painters, writers, scientists, philosophers – find the time to produce their opus? Mason Currey investigated the rigid Daily Rituals that hundreds of creatives practiced in order to carve out time, every day, to work their craft. Some kept to the same disciplined regimen for decades while others locked in patterns only while working on specific works. Creative Routines Poster

Carbon Cycle @ National Geographic Magazine Get a taste of what awaits you in print from this compelling excerpt. It's there on a monitor: the forest is breathing. Late summer sunlight filters through a canopy of green as Steven Wofsy unlocks a shed in a Massachusetts woodland and enters a room stuffed with equipment and tangled with wires and hoses. A Pentecostal, Evangelical Naturalist?! The following is cross-posted from my new Emergent Village Voice blog, here. I’m often described in the mainstream media as an ‘evangelical minister’ or ‘Pentecostal preacher’, even though I speak far more often in moderate and liberal churches (and in secular settings) than I do in evangelical, Pentecostal, and Emerging Church venues. Not surprisingly, I’ve been asked on a number of occasions, by both religious liberals and conservatives, “In what sense do you consider yourself a Pentecostal evangelical, and how does that mesh with your being an outspoken religious naturalist?” For 33 years I’ve proudly called myself a Pentecostal, though my political and theological views are by no means right-wing, and for the past two decades I’ve tended to say “evolutionary Pentecostal” or “Pentecostal naturalist” for clarification. My experience in Pentecostal and evangelical contexts has been almost entirely positive—indeed, salvific—and continues to nourish my life and work.

Oldest evidence of photosynthesis Scientists claim to have found the oldest evidence of photosynthesis - the most important chemical reaction on Earth - in 3.7-billion-year-old rocks. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae and certain bacteria convert sunlight to chemical energy. Danish researchers say rocks from Greenland show life-forms were using the process about one billion years earlier than has previously been shown. Details of the research are published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) « Teaching Biology The Lampyridae Raffinesque 1815 are the beetles commonly known as fireflies and lightning bugs. There are over 2000 species in over 100 genera, with this being a quarter of the expected diversity (Viviani, 2001). They’re found all over the world and in all sorts of habitats, including aquatic ones (Fu et al., 2005). Their classification has classically not followed a phylogenetic system – as McDermott (1964) wrote, their classification “should not be construed as indicating phylogenetic relationship”. Of course, I don’t agree with such a view, being a paraphyly-hating systematist rather than a taxonomist. Lampyrid subfamilies are differentiated with easy-to-spot characters, such as the position of the light organs or the dorsal visibility of the head (how far under the pronotum it goes – it can be completely covered, as in cockroaches, or more exposed).

Evolutionary Christianity God is a personification, not a person — an undeniable interpretation, not an otherworldly tyrant. If we fail to grasp this, we cannot possibly understand religion or religious differences. “Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.” ~ Philip K. Dick Annotated version of Watson and Crick paper reprinted with permission from Nature magazine A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid J. D. Climate Effects on Human Evolution This article explores the hypothesis that key human adaptations evolved in response to environmental instability. This idea was developed during research conducted by the Smithsonian’s Human Origins Program. Natural selection was not always a matter of ‘survival of the fittest’ but also survival of those most adaptable to changing surroundings.

The evolution of Ilia Delio "We are dying -- and that's OK," Ilia Delio told a gathering of 150 Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood, N.Y., in late June. "It just means something new is emerging.
