Design Squad Parents, Educators & Engineers Activity Guide Ideal for use in afterschool programs, workshops, and events, the Activity Guide has five versatile activities that require little facilitation and are manageable with large numbers of kids. What Is Upcycling? Tires... What Is Upcyling? Upcycling is the process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful. For example: Kite power getting off the ground in Germany Despite offering numerous advantages over its rotating brethren, most notably the ability to reach the high-speed winds found at higher altitudes, kite-based energy systems are yet to really get off the ground in a meaningful way. But things are looking up. Earlier this year, NASA revealed it is investigating ways to improve the aerodynamics and autonomous flight control of kites for power generation applications, and now Berlin-based wind energy developer NTS GmbH has teamed with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) to make their own kite energy system concept a reality. The team’s “kite power station” would see kites attached to cables measuring around 700 meters (2,297 ft) long, which would allow the kites to fly at heights of 300 to 500 meters (984 to 1,640 ft).
DESIGN SQUAD . On the Moon Activity Guide Written in collaboration with NASA, this guide has six activities that bring engineering and NASA's moon missions to life. Two activities—Launch It and Touchdown—are for grades 3-8 (and work well at events). Three activities—Roving on the Moon, Heavy Lifting, and On Target—are for grades 6-12. 30 Awesome Upcycling Ideas That Will Make Your Home Awesome Before you throw anything away, really think about it. For example, if you've finished burning a candle that comes in a big glass jar, don't waste it. Instead, drain out the leftover wax and use it as storage. This is called "upcycling." Upcycling is "the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value." And it's not just for people who love arts and crafts.
Graphene Batteries Offer 5-Second iPhone Charging Researchers at UCLA have discovered a way to make graphene batteries that charge super fast, are inexpensively produced, are non-toxic, and that blow current battery technology out of the water in terms of efficiency and performance. An iPhone powered by a graphene supercapacitor could charge in five-seconds. A MacBook powered by a graphene supercapacitor could charge 30-seconds. Electric cars powered by the technology could be charged as quickly as filling a car with a tank of gas. DESIGN SQUAD . Teacher's Guide Written especially for middle school teachers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the Teacher's Guide has 11 activities divided into three units-- force, electricity, and sound-- topics found in nearly every physical science curriculum.
