This plan is meant to get you started, but effective marketing requires flexibility. If something is not working for you after you have given it a concerted effort, try another tactic to reach the realistic goals you establish. Part One: Description of Current Situation and Goals. 1. The entire marketing process is based on having a good book to sell. Identify books that are similar to yours, and describe how yours is different from and better than competitive titles. Finally, develop a strong mission statement. 2. As an author, you are also selling yourself as a product, so it is important to start making the right brand impressions early. 3. You cannot market to everybody, so think about who will buy your books. 4. Write a specific statement of what you want to accomplish in the next year. Making Your Own Ebooks This is a February 21, 2012 revision of this post, which originally appeared September, 23, 2011. This is one of those posts where I describe something mind-breakingly complex that I did with my computer. How To Make Money on Ebooks 1. Write a damn good book. This should be your main priority. It's also one of the hardest things to do, and the hardest things to judge for yourself if you've done it. The problem is, most writers believe their books are good. I recommend joining a writers group and getting feedback. I don't recommend paying for a freelance editor--it's better you learn craft on your own. 2. Three bucks is a more than fair price for a full length digital book. Even with short pieces, make sure they are good enough. 3. A poorly formatted ebook will get bad reviews, and ultimately it WILL NOT SELL. 4. 5.
