How to Use Digital Storytelling in Your Classroom This how-to article accompanies the feature "Film School: Making Movies From Storyboard to Screen." Storytelling is a vital skill with seemingly unlimited applications. Done well, it can have a magical effect -- moving, enlightening, or entertaining audiences of any size. In today's digitized world, visual storytelling is a favorite classroom tool, and the affordability and accessibility of technology such as iMovie provides opportunities not imagined twenty years ago. 1. Think of movies you adore, movies you could watch again and again. 2. Though students need some knowledge of how to use equipment, teaching about technology should never be the focus of the curriculum. 3. Don't be intimidated if your students learn faster than you do. 4. Accept the fact that you will spend a portion of your time scratching your head, wondering, "Why won't that work?" 5. Kids are not used to the kind of freedom they'll need to do great creative work. 6. 7.

iPads in First Grade In our classroom, first grade students use the iPad and Web 2.0 tools to build comprehension, expand audience and interact with the world! Our goal has been to go beyond substitutional interactions with the device and seek tools that modify, transform and redefine teaching and learning. On any given day you’ll see students respond to text using a variety of tools. During a read aloud students may sit on the rug and respond by drawing their visual image with a drawing app. Or maybe they will jot their questions about a text on a Google spreadsheet or participate in a backchannel discussion on Edmodo. At the end of the read aloud, first graders will save their work on the iPad and email a sample to the teacher. You’ll also see students write for an authentic audience. The six and seven-year-olds at our school are recording artists and movie producers. First graders engage in a variety of digital communities. Like this: Like Loading...

Website Credibility Evaluation iPads in Guided Reading Before a class set of iPads I was differentiating my literacy centers for guided reading. Here were some of literacy centers and how I differentiated them: 1. Word Study--At the beginning of the year, it is beginning sounds. As the year progresses it is ending sounds, short vowel sounds, blends, digraphs, long vowels, irregular verbs. I made copies of the CD's or tapes so I would not use my originals in tape decks (so little hands would not ruin the tape by pushing record). Now, I use iPads during guided reading. Here are some of the apps I use. I am working on incorporating Raz-kids where the students will also be assigned leveled books based on their guided reading.
