Problems of the Month Problem solving is the cornerstone of doing mathematics. A problem that you can’t solve in less than a day is usually a problem that is similar to one that you have solved before. But in real life, a problem is a situation that confronts you and you don’t have an idea of where to even start. If we want our students to be problem solvers and mathematically powerful, we must model perseverance and challenge students with non-routine problems. Administrators, teachers and parents should facilitate and support students in the process of attacking and reasoning about the problems. The solution is not as important as the process of problem solving. The educator or parent should not be impatient with the student’s struggle. The principal should embrace the concept of problem solving and model problem-solving leadership, being a facilitator of non-routine problems. Once the problem is presented to the students, the principal should be visible in facilitating the tasks alongside the teachers.
One Grain of Rice (lesson plan) The following excerpt is taken from the book One Grain of Rice by Demi. (If you do not have access to this book, consider telling students a similar story as a way of introducing the lesson. This will also provide the background needed for writing algebraic equations, as well as the other mathematical details of the lesson. Uno de los elementos más interesantes del arte islámico son los Arabescos: adornos simétricos construidos con líneas que imitan las formas de hojas, flores, cintas, etc. éste Arabesco, que decora un muro interior del palacio de Alhambra, es sumamente impresionante, pues está formado por diversos nucleos que no son idénticos (aunque cuentan con cierta similitud), y sin embargo, están todos conectados entre sí. éste es un elemento central de los Arabescos (más que de los otros patrones geométricos del arte islámico), la diversidad, similitud y conexión entre ellos. NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge 2015 : Get Active in Middle Years Sport and physical activity in schools need not, and should not be restricted to designated PE and Sport times. In collaboration with the University of Newcastle, the NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge undertook a research study of Stage 3 classes that found significant improvements in student engagement, on-task behaviour and overall classroom behaviour when students combine thinking while moving.
