You know those feelings that come over you when you play around a bit with a recipe, adding a pinch of this and a tablespoon of that? It’s always a rollercoaster of emotion… this time, with a very sweet ending. The cake is made out of black beans. Even if you’re the fiercest of bean haters (like I am), you’ll fall head over heels for this moist chocolate cake. Note: I cut 1 single layer in half, width-wise, and stacked the semicircular halves on top of one another to achieve the 2 layer cake shown here. The best part about this cake is that it’s totally budget-friendly. Secret Ingredient Healthy Chocolate Cake Serves 9 This gluten-free chocolate cake is so decadent and moist, you’ll never guess its secret ingredient – black beans! *Erythritol is a natural, calorie-free sweetener. Healthy Frosting Frosting is often laden with butter and refined sugar, but these elements are not necessary for a rich, decorative cake topping. Nutritious ingredients such as nut butter, yogurt and tofu add creaminess without the help of butter, while natural sweeteners like honey can replace refined sugar. Putting together a few of these common ingredients, you can make a healthy – even vegan – frosting to enhance any cake. It only takes three ingredients and a few minutes to whip up a delectable frosting with nut butter. The tangy flavor of yogurt pairs well with cakes that are traditionally topped with cream cheese frosting. Chocolate ganache is a classic recipe that does not require any added sugar. When you need a mild, white topping to tint and flavor as you please, this tofu-based frosting does the trick.

The Top 10 Psychology Studies of 2010 The end of 2010 fast approaches, and I'm thrilled to have been asked by the editors of Psychology Today to write about the Top 10 psychology studies of the year. I've focused on studies that I personally feel stand out, not only as examples of great science, but even more importantly, as examples of how the science of psychology can improve our lives. Each study has a clear "take home" message, offering the reader an insight or a simple strategy they can use to reach their goals , strengthen their relationships, make better decisions, or become happier. If you extract the wisdom from these ten studies and apply them in your own life, 2011 just might be a very good year. 1) How to Break Bad Habits If you are trying to stop smoking , swearing, or chewing your nails, you have probably tried the strategy of distracting yourself - taking your mind off whatever it is you are trying not to do - to break the habit. Quinoa and Black Bean Burger and a “Grain Mains” Book Giveaway The media is awash in the benefits of “whole grains” these days. So much that the big food companies have jumped on board touting “whole grains” in everything from cookies to crackers to Cheerios. While my guess is that those products might be slightly better for you than their more processed counterparts, I can’t help but feel this is a bit akin to greenwashing. This is why I find myself trying to cook with whole grains in their original form more and more. The new cookbook by Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough, Grain Mains: 101 Surprising and Satisfying Whole Grain Recipes for Every Meal of the Day , is filled with recipes featuring whole grains used in a variety of ways. I like it when a cookbook not only inspires me to cook from its recipes but also teaches me about the food or culture. Besides information on the specific grains (flavor, texture, history, best cooking method) Grain Mains has some other helpful features. Hash-brown casserole | The Wanna be Country Girl This hash-brown casserole is the perfect side dish. I served it last night with my chicken pot pie to a crowd. It’s cheesy comfort food at its best. Start out by adding 1 – 32 ounce bag of hash-browns to a large mixing bowl. Next add 2 – 10 3/4 ounce cans of cream of potato soup. Followed by 16 ounces of sour cream. Now comes the cheesy part. And 1 cup of fresh grated parmesan cheese. Next add a good-sized pinch of salt and pepper, and that’s it. Put the mixture into a buttered Pyrex. Run this wonderful concoction into a pre-heated oven at 350′ for 1 hour See…..brown and crunchy. You may wonder why I’ve taken such a close-up picture. It’s because I almost forgot to take a photo at all. Enjoy! the wanna be country girl – Caroline

Digitalhead Daily » [TIPS] RunAsDate lets you indefinitely extend software trial periods If you get a trial version of a program, it will generally give to a certain amount of time to try the software and evaluate it before buying. What if the software’s 3-day trial period just isn’t enough for you to be satisfied? There are a few programs out there that will let you run programs as a set date to get more out of a trial period, but RunAsDate from NirSoft seems to be the most simple out of the bunch. This utility is simple to use. To simplify the process later on, tell it to create a desktop shortcut. This could be a downside if the program actually uses the date and time for whatever purpose, but if you want everything to work properly, you might want to consider either buying the software or looking for an open source alternative. Now for the caveats. You may want to remove all other shortcuts to the program from your desktop and start menu after making sure this tool works with the program you are using it with.
