Our Story - Pachacuti It was Carry Somers’ British sense of “fair play” that started her on her entrepreneurial journey to create the pioneering Fair trade fashion brand, Pachacuti. During an MA research trip to Ecuador, she encountered two cooperatives of hand-knitters who were both victims of arson attacks due to the threat they posed to the local middlemen. Outraged by this exploitation, she took inspiration from Anita Roddick's autobiography, and decided that if one woman could have such a positive impact on the beauty industry, there was nothing to stop her from trying to do the same within the fashion industry. She provided the two groups with the financial means to buy in bulk and, with no formal background in fashion, designed a knitwear collection that sold out in six weeks upon her return to Britain. Twenty one years later, Pachacuti is a global Fair Trade brand, best known for our Panama and felt hats which are sold in 25 countries, with sales in the Far East growing particularly rapidly.
