U.S. endorses limited gay marriage right The Obama administration on Thursday urged the Supreme Court to rule in the case of California’s Proposition 8 that same-sex marriage should be required in eight more states, beyond the nine that already permit it, although it stopped short of explicitly calling for the Justices to extend the right to the entire nation. [Editor’s note: Directly below this post is a shorter discussion of today’s filing in Plain English.] Here was the government’s key argument why the Golden State’s ban on same-sex marriage fails the constitutional test the administration suggested: “California’s extension of all of the substantive rights and responsibilities of marriage to gay and lesbian domestic partners particularly undermines the justifications for Proposition 8.” Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., filed the brief shortly after 6:30 p.m. Beyond those eight, nine other states already recognize full marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Omegle Yes, the Boy Scouts' Decision Is a Victory Like many equality-minded Americans, I breathed a sigh of relief yesterday when I heard that the Boy Scouts of America's National Council had voted, by a landslide margin, to stop excluding gay kids from membership. Yesterday's move by the Scouts was a landmark step in the direction of fairness and inclusivity, especially since it comes from an organization that's almost fetishized by the Religious Right as a symbol of "traditional" (read: exclusionary) American values. But it's still only a partial victory because the ban on gay adult scout leaders remains in place. In fact, the Scouts didn't consider repealing it at all. Clearly, the Scouts have a lot of evolving left to do before they fully embrace equality. Still, I thought it would be fairly self-evident that the end of a 103-year-old gay youth ban -- in a group that's a cultural touchstone of American life -- is something to applaud, affirm, and even celebrate. Enough!

Let’s discuss. I’m starting to think that our biggest problem is a lack of vulnerability. This is where it gets sticky for us gay dudes. Wrong. Our work is so not done, it’s ridiculous. Mindsets like this are toxic—especially when there are other gay men in the arena. But we do want to be loved, and that’s like, a human thing. This brings me to another point—watch any given episode of Super Soul Sunday and you’ll likely hear that before you can be vulnerable you have to first come from a place of self-love.

If they strike a deal, the Islanders would begin play at Barclays Center in Brooklyn at the start of the 2014-15 season. According to sources with Nassau and the Islanders, both sides are open to a financial arrangement that could benefit the bankrupt county and the money-losing team. The Islanders’ lease does not expire for another two full seasons, in the summer of 2015. Leaving Nassau Coliseum a year earlier would enable the Islanders to begin capitalizing on revenue streams in Brooklyn, while not playing as lame duck tenants at the old barn on Hempstead Turnpike any longer than possible.
