Meteora, Greece After five weeks in Greece (called Ellada or Ελλάδα in Greek), we most enjoyed wandering romantic Santorini Island and trekking the rugged northern mountains of Zagori. We hiked a total of 170 miles (280 km) with day packs and stayed overnight in pleasant pensions and north Pindus mountain refuges. Robinson Expeditions conveniently moved our luggage each day to the next pension. Carol and I joined a group of friends touring Greece (via Amsterdam, Netherlands) from April 26 to May 30, 2001. Before visiting Greece, read about crucial Greek history, culture, and language in books recommended at the bottom of this article. Paris's Largest Flea Market: Les puces Saint-Ouen porte de Clignancourt | AnyTrip Blog Written as part of Paris Outdoors Week for our Love Paris giveaway Les Puces de Saint-Ouen (widely known as Les Puces) is the largest antique market in the world, covering seven hectares. The flea market is situated in Porte de Clignancourt in the north of Paris, each weekend receiving visitors numbering between 120-180,000. History Les Puces dates back over two centuries, when rag and bone men, called crocheteurs scoured through the garbage of Paris at night to find valuable objects to sell. The romantic term was ‘pecheurs de lune’ or fishermen for the moon. Eventually the market became popular and collectors started visiting Les Puces searching for unique pieces and antique dealers would bargain any kind of goods from furniture to rugs and from paintings to fine jewellery. 1885 was officially the first year of the market given that the owners of the stalls started to pay a fee to the town of Saint Ouen and currently the market has over 2000 shops selling everything imaginable. This is Montenegro  Montenegro is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. You should visit it! ↑ Back to top The Enchanting Cinque Terre: Fiat-Free Italy I'm up early in my favorite village on the Italian Riviera, as the morning sun touches the tip of Vernazza's bell tower and greets a peaceful world. The air is damp, cool and refreshing as I wander downhill, passing underneath the train tracks. I enjoy the fact that the town is traffic-free, and realize that my favorite Italian towns are all this way. Fiat-free Italy ... just the way I like it. Advertisement The Cinque Terre—as this stretch of five towns along the Italian Riviera is called—is located in northern Italy between Pisa and Genoa, and it's the lowbrow, under-appreciated alternative to the French Riviera. Until the advent of tourism in this generation, the towns were poor and remote. To preserve the Cinque Terre's natural and cultural wonders, Italy has declared the region a park—towns and all. Riomaggiore—the most substantial non-resort of the five towns—is a fascinating tangle of pastel homes that lean on each other like drunken sailors. You might also like:
