Pearltrees Brings New Editing Features To Its Curation Service Pearltrees, the Paris-based curation and bookmarking service, is launching a major update to its service today that brings a number of new editing tools to the site. Pearltrees users were already able to write and save notes, as well as store images and other content on the service. Now, they will also be able to annotate the texts they saved from around the web, caption images and use the service’s new WYSIWYG text editor to write more complex notes. The service is also adding a couple of new personalization features that allow users to add a new background to their collections and change the overall look and feel of the collection.

MOOC pedagogy: the challenges of developing for Coursera In the summer of 2012 the team of teachers and researchers associated with the MSc in E-learning programme at the University of Edinburgh began developing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for the Coursera platform. Launched only a year earlier, this for-profit company founded by Stanford professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller has focussed primarily on hosting computer science related courses from big name US institutions. The recently announced partnership with the University of Edinburgh presented the team with an opportunity to engage and experiment with the much-publicised MOOC format, and foreground issues related to the theory and practice of online education itself. Class2Go: Stanford’s New Open-Source Platform For Online Education The cost of higher education in the U.S. today is ridiculous. Student debt shot north of $1 trillion earlier this year, for example. It’s not surprising, then, that the adoption of web and mobile learning tools is skyrocketing, toppling old modes of learning and creating new ones. There is no better, more relevant example than “MOOCs,” otherwise known as “massive online open courses.” The buzz around these platforms (think Khan Academy, Coursera) is creating a stir in higher education, as they’ve come to represent a new model of online learning (change) and the promise of quality, affordable education at scale — something that just wasn’t possible five years ago.

What is the theory that underpins <em>our</em> moocs? If you’re even casually aware of what is happening in higher education, you’ve likely heard of massive open online courses (MOOCs). They have been covered by NY Times, Chronicle of Higher Education, TV programs, newspapers, and a mess or blogs. While MOOCs have been around since at least 2008, the landscape has changed dramatically over the past 10 months. In this timeframe, close to $100 million has been invested in corporate (Udacity) and university (EDx and Coursera) MOOCs . The future of MOOCs MOOCs get a bad rap. Dismissed as prescriptive, or teacher-centric, or unsocial, or something else, it’s like a badge of honour to espouse why you dislike MOOCs. Jump Off the Coursera Bandwagon - Commentary By Doug Guthrie Like lemmings, too many American colleges are mindlessly rushing out to find a way to deliver online education, and more and more often they are choosing Coursera. The company, founded this year by two Stanford University computer scientists, has already enrolled more than two million students, has engaged 33 academic institutions as partners, and is offering more than 200 free massive open online courses, or MOOC's. A college's decision to jump on the Coursera bandwagon is aided—and eased—by knowing that academic heavyweights like Harvard, Stanford, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are already on board. As one college president described it to The New York Times, "You're known by your partners, and this is the College of Cardinals."

Universities have started giving away their content free as "massive open online courses", with the satisfyingly ridiculous acronym mooc (I challenge you to say it three times with a straight face). Eleven top UK universities recently announced they were joining the Open University to launch FutureLearn, in a bid to catch up with the elite US institutions that have led the way in teaching huge numbers online. It all sounds great for people who, for one reason or another, can't go to a traditional university.
