Big Data in the Big Apple: understanding New York using millions of Foursquare check-ins What can we learn from millions of check-ins on Foursquare? An unprecedented view into the behavior of cities. How big data is making cities easier to use. Foursquare began its life as a way to see what your friends are up to, but it has quickly evolved into a artificial intelligence / recommendation engine that knows you and your surroundings. Foursquare has already has 2.5 billion check-ins from over 20 million people (including me and Sander Duivestein) and generates about new 80 check-ins every second. 135 million of those check-ins are in New York. One question that can be asked of these types of data is if we can see some kind of activity stream per neighborhood. The example mentioned is only one question you could ask. The data aggregated from the millions of check-ins provides cities with new insights in how the city works.

Tumbling out of the back of a re-appropriated tip-up truck will come huge building blocks, all colours and shapes. As kids everything had the potential for magic, so embedded sensors will allow us to make unexpected combinations of blocks sing, light up and slide open. Films of Bristol's dream cities will be projected in a central location- alongside new beautiful data mashups of blocks' movements. With every city we tour to, footage of the inspiring creations will be collected, creating a testament to the cities we want to build. Los registros almacenados como requisito para satisfacer normativas de protección de datos, han pasado a nivel mundial, de 376 Peta Bytes en 2003 a más de 1.600 Peta Bytes en 2006. El desarrollo de las Smart Cities conlleva afrontar retos en muy diferentes ámbitos. Desde el social, hasta el económico, pasando por el tecnológico. En especial, la tecnología es uno de los principales habilitadores de las ciudades inteligentes gracias al desarrollo en áreas como las Telecomunicaciones, los microprocesadores o el desarrollo de aplicaciones. Hay múltiples definiciones para el término Smart City. A este componente IT, hay que sumar la tendencia constante y clara de ocupación de las ciudades por los individuos. Big Data: refinando ese nuevo petróleo llamado datos Vivimos en un mar de datos que crece a un ritmo vertiginoso. Baste señalar que sólo en un día de 2011 se generaron más datos que en todo el año 2000. Para poner orden en este caos surge el big data, pero… ¿Estamos aprovechando todo su potencial? Sensores, redes sociales, dispositivos móviles, apps, arduinos, tarjetas de crédito, antenas de telefonía, internet de las cosas… todos estos elementos están generando en nuestras sociedad una cantidad ingente de datos sin precedentes a un ritmo frenético. Esta multiplicación de información sobre objetos y personas está dando lugar a la creación de un gran volumen de datos sobre el que se plantean interrogantes acerca de cómo gestionarlos y visualizarlos para poder sacarle el máximo partido. El hablar de datos supone un territorio aún por explorar, una riqueza por explotar. La enorme cantidad de información nos produce bloqueo: a más cantidad de datos, menor capacidad de toma de decisiones adecuadas. Demasiados datos, sí, pero…¿Dónde están?
We don’t need more data scientists — just make big data easier to use Virtually any article today about big data inevitably turns to the notion that the country is suffering from a crucial shortage of data scientists. A much-talked-about 2011 McKinsey & Co. survey pointed out that many organizations lack both the skilled personnel needed to mine big data for insights and the structures and incentives required to use big data to make informed decisions and act on them. What seems to be missing from all of these discussions, though, is a dialogue about how to steer around this bottleneck and make big data directly accessible to business leaders. We have done it before in the software industry, and we can do it again. To accomplish this goal, it’s helpful to understand the data scientist’s role in big data. Currently, big data is a melting pot of distributed data architectures and tools like Hadoop, NoSQL, Hive and R. While difficult to generalize, there are three main roles served by the data scientist: data architecture, machine learning, and analytics.
